First of all if your DM is really letting you play a Master Summoner then... you're done. You kinda just win the game. You don't need help from us.

Other than Saurian Shaman Druid, I think you've got all you need. Grab Haste?

Flying Dinos can be great with the Pit spells and stuff like Tar Pool.

If you want a character who can do more than simply summon dinosaurs, you might consider going with a Druid (Saurian Shaman). You get a dinosaur animal companion, full druid spell-casting, advanced shapeshifting for saurian forms, and some nifty specials when summoning reptiles and dinosaurs. You lose out on the 1 minute/level duration and the celestial template, but gain other benefits.

Either (Master Summoner or Saurian Shaman) is a powerful choice, but for somewhat different reasons.

I haven't played a Saurian Shaman, but did play a Lion Shaman, and I've played a Master Summoner. Both were fun, powerful and worked out fine.

Well as a master summoner I would definitely have good group buffs. Hasted summoned monsters are really good. You'll want augmented summons , so you need spell focus (conjuration) too (it's a prereq). which is good, because create pit is one of the best spells on your list. Superior summoning would also be helpful. Since you're already taking sf (conj), grab some more conj spells; there are a lot of useful save spells in the conjuration school. Glitterdust and stinking cloud come to mind. Make sure to flank with your summons, that and haste should help your party make quick work of any encounter.

Thanks for the advice I'll look into the saurian shaman, and yes on the haste.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

saurian druid is perfect. super summoner, protection Vs X wont stop you - with augument summon the dino's are just WOW.
and a full Ac
and a full 9 level decent spell list
and spontaneous caster
and with but a str of 14, you can even melee yourself.
it is a endless pro with not a single con

Spontaneous caster ? It is a good idea but the stats will have to move a bit.

Not a true Spontanious Caster, but you can spontaneous convert to Dinosaur Summons.

I have played a Halfling Eagle Shaman from level 1 to 12, which is in rulewise in all ways inferior to the Saurian Shaman and I had a great time doing it!

Saurian Shaman vs. Master Summoner

Pro:
Wildshape
Totem form
Not considered as broken
If you go unconscious your companion won't dissapear
24 hours to switch from companion (Need a companion that can fly, Need one you can ride? Need one that can swim?)

also PRO :
full lvl 9 spells...great saves (only low ref).

Pro: healing
Spell summon nature's ally similar dinosaurs

Con:no celestial
Duration of summons
No dino riding until level 7.

Some deliberation will be necessary.

no celestial is also a PRO - no protection Vs X...
be a small race and ride dino form level 1...

Art of my Eagle Shaman

Duration of Summons is shorter than that of a summoner, but long enough for combat.

As you can shape change riding your pet isn't really an issue at higher level and if you play a halfling you can ride your dino from level 1+

Excellent artwork. The only dinosaur I could find as an animal companion is small until lvl 7. Is there more to choose from ?

Animal Companions see Table: Animal Choices.

Yes I see there are quite a few and a flying one too. I was only looking at the core rule book. Thanks for the assist.

Am I the only one who started hearing "Dinosaur King is what you wanna be..." after reading this title?
