So, there's a new Star Wars trailer

Movies

Here is it.

I'm having a hard time putting my finger on it, but something about this just looks...right. It seems like a bleak and desperate struggle set against the harshness of space and the darkness of man's capacity for evil in a high-sci-fantasy realm where something special pervades all existence. It feels like Star Wars. Well, guess time will tell if that feeling is delivered on.

Anyways, thoughts?

Me like. My mood has changed from "wary" to "cautiously optimistic".

Meh.
I get Phantom Menace vibes from this and earlier trailers. Hope it delivers, though.

Interesting.

I get half Phantom Menace/prequels vibes and half old-skool SW vibes.

But mostly it actually looks too slick, the main characters body language doesn't quite have the gravitas of the originals and the costuming is just so slightly off somehow. Can't put my finger on it - somehow, all these years later - the portrayals of Han, Leia, Luke, Ben Kenobi, Seethree, Chewie, the Vadester et al, look like mythical heroes/villains, not actors trying to play a part. Which these portrayals do. Weird.

Then again we haven't seen the good bits with the motley aliens yet...

I really appreciate the trailer being visually pleasing without giving me the cliff notes on the films plot. I wasnt terribly interested, and neither was my GF, before, but the trailer looked good enough to give this a go. Probably not immediately but soon after release.

I'm pretty sure this is being discussed in the "The Force Awakens" thread.

Sovereign Court

Well hopefully this thread sticks to the movie and not every SW topic and book ever written. Some of us are only casual fans.

Liberty's Edge

I said this in the other thread, but I'll say it here as well ...

I think they nailed it - the trailer looks pretty fantastic. I'm very excited to see the movie- it looks like JJ and all the others involved absolutely knocked it out of the park!

I have been a SW movie fan in the past, but thus far these trailers and the rumors of what they are doing haven't thrilled me all that much. Then again, I've found I'm not half the fan that many are.

I think more and more that this may be a film made ONLY for the hardcore fans and people that aren't so hardcore...and maybe the typical person that doesn't follow Star Wars all that much may not have much to expect from it.

Of course, there are a LOT of hardcore SW fans out there...so instant win for the blockbuster is probably guaranteed.

It's just not something that's going to be something that's really cool...more like a Michael Bay film than other wise?

Trailer actually was a bigger turn off than anything else thus far. I thought I may be a SW fan, but then, it turns out maybe I'm just not that elite. I'm actually not all that interested in the film from what I've seen (I want to be...but I'm not).

I'm actually more interested in Dawn of Justice or worse, the new Steve Jobs movie at this point.

Odd. Because I'd expect the really hardcore to be turned off by dropping all the non-movie canon they've absorbed over the years.

And have in fact heard of lot of that nerd rage.

I'm cautiously hopefully. Having been burned by the prequels.

Ironically, I dropped by the force.net for my once a year visit (a place where I think they are mostly the hardest of the hardcore) and most of them seem to overwhelmingly be optimistic. I think they may have all bought tickets for themselves, their families, their extended families, their friends and their friends families.

At least that's the feeling I get. Actually, I guess it's now bi-annual visit, because that's where I got all the info of what this movie was about (thus far it's been dead on with all the reveals) from previously.

I actually want to reflect their excitement, but I just can't get excited about the movie. It's really sort of a...meh..feeling. I don't know what exactly WOULD get me excited about it, but thus far...really am not that excited. The hardcore's at various sites (even Paizo is a pretty good example, those discussing it in depth who know all the facts about star wars [I only got an 8/15 :)] seem pretty psyched up about it too) seem all pretty united in their excitement.

I just haven't been able to get that excited. Maybe it's one effect someone commented on. All the old folks are getting all gassed up and excited about it, but the young folk simply see it as another movie. They don't have the nostalgia or excitement other than it's another big blockbuster coming out no different then the other blockbuster.

I wouldn't say I'm young...but in some ways...that sort of reflects my thoughts. There's nothing that's come out to make this movie stand out to me more than any other movie thus far...and some other movies I seem far more excited about currently.

I expect the movie is hitting all the nostalgia nerves for older folks though and that's why it's going to sell mega bucks and be popular...for once the old people get their movie blockbuster and if the young people see it...well...that's just the bonus.

I'll probably still go see it (even have my tickets bought by one of those big fans and go for free on opening weekend) and if it's really good...that's great. But nothing has really made me all that enthusiastic about it thus far. I AM excited about the Dawn of Justice movie though...and Captain America...and Spectre so I can't trade in my nerd ticket just yet (plus I'm a pathfinder fan...so hey).

I dunno. Anecdotal evidence, but the low 20s kid sitting next to me at work is far more excited than I am. He's got his opening night tickets.

I'm a bit bummed that the trailer seems to invalidate almost all of the post Return of the Jedi expanded universe (it certainly looks to me like the rebels didn't go on to run the republic from Coruscant, etc. and the knowledge of jedi going away seems a big change to allowing any EU content to be compatible).

That being said, the trailer looks good to me, and I'll have to adjust my view of Star Wars to be movies and TV shows only. I'll never read another SW book again though if they've shown they might sweep it aside later.

My sister-in-law has already bought tickets for my brother and herself as well as their two big-time Star Wars mega-buff friends. I haven't bought mine yet, but I don't do the whole midnight-showing thing. I'll probably grab a viewing the first weekend though, preferably early on a Saturday.

I've never really understood this attitude. Was the story good when you read it? Have you suddenly lost the pleasure you had reading it the first time?

Did you really think that the movies were going to hold to a giant convoluted continuity that only a tiny percentage of their hoped for audience knows anything about?

Maybe I've just seen it often enough to be cynical and not expect "canon" to last.

I think you just hit it on the NOSE for me. I was NEVER a real big fan of the EU. I read Zahn's books because I like Zahn (he was a big writer outside of Star Wars, sci fi fans may know that...but others might not). Outside of his books, the EU just seemed to be pasted on fan fiction.

Fan Fiction of that caliber really never got me all that excited...ever.

Not for Star Trek, not for Star Wars...not for just about anything. I DID read stuff for the SW RPGs, I suppose that might count, and I got excited about the KotOR by Bioware...but that was the same reason I got psyched up about Mass Effect and Dragon Age games in the past...because it was by Bioware and they made good games (starting out with the Baldurs Gate series which is where I started with them).

But, I never read any of the Mass Effect books or Dragon Age books...most really do seem just like tack ons or fan fiction.

I think that's the same feel or vibe I'm getting from these movie trailers thus far. If the movie is more than that it will be great...but overall...I'm just not excited about it.

Most of the younger people I hang out with, if their parents aren't all excited, they actually are more interested in Football and other things than Star Wars. Maybe it's the crowd I hang out with, they prefer other things?

AS for Zahn's books, I still have them on my shelf. Doubt I'd give up something like that, especially since that was the ONE series that Lucas DID approve personally and I hear rather in depth(though who knows if he would have overwritten it if he had made sequels or not) prior to it being published...as it was the first. Not only that, but it complements the other Zahn books I have.

As for the EU, as I said, really didn't follow it all that much. I DID play video games, but it wouldn't bother me if they overwrote that stuff as far as relevance goes (they were fun games, but they count as fan fiction to a point as well).

Mine is just...meh...

All the Star Wars fans that were fans before seems psyched about the movie though...those who were not though...I really think this movie is hitting the nostalgia factor as it's driving force. Those not hit as hard by nostalgia really are just bystanders to it.

Of course, nostalgia can be a powerful thing...Phantom Menace sold HOW MANY TICKETS...and I think that was probably based a LOT on nostalgia people had of the original trilogy. (Call me a skeptic of thinking it sold that many tickets because it was a good movie, because I can't believe it made that much money off that factor. I attribute it that it was the first star wars movie in 15 years).

I see the dropping of the EU as a mixed blessing. On one hand, I loved the Thrawn Trilogy and Stackpole and Allston's X-wing Series, but on the other, the complete crapfest of the Yuuzong Vong never happened.

While I am upset that it looks like Luke never hooked up with Mara Jade, at least Chewie isn't going to have a moon dripped on him.

I own all the star wars dvd's aside from phantom menance. There is a reason for that. PM is a craptastic movie that has about 10-15 minutes of watchable scenes. The rest of it feels like it was meant for a 7 year old, specifically Lucas own children.

Now some people are saying they got sucked in by the trailers for the PM and so feel very wary of being sucked in again.

The first Force awakens trailer had me a little dubious, but the second one this summer dispelled all doubts. The third one is stellar. I have a lot of trouble understanding people saying they think this will stink like PM after seeing these trailers. I almost suspect some of trolling. This is not fanboy nostalgia talking, from a purely visual presentation it looks like a kick ass action adventure movie.

However, it does help that I am a fanboy..it makes it all sweeter.

With Lawrence Kasdan writing, you can be sure there will be less "I hate sand" and more "Apology accepted Captain Needa" moments.

Liberty's Edge

* Sigh.

The EU was not canon. It never was canon.

Disney EXPANDED what materials are canon.

I think there has been a lot of time for the older characters to solidify into cultural icons. A lot of the nostalgia, hype, and just general love for the movies has a lot to do with it. You get to a point where the characters have become culture icons and stop being characters in films. They're part of our mythology now. The newer characters are still just characters in a film. Maybe that will change, may it won't.

I admit though, I don't feel the kind of presence with Kylo Ren that I always have with Vader. Maybe that will change when I see the film and he's on screen for more than a few seconds.

Pan wrote:

None of that will be in the movie. Disney has made all of that into an alternate "Legends" timeline. The new movies should not reference any of it.

For my part I am super excited for the movie, and maybe just as excited (maybe more...) for the saga marathon the day before (yes I got tickets). I was born between Empire and Jedi and for a few reasons didn't get to see all of the 1997 theatrical releases in the theater. So being able to see the Star Wars trilogy on the big screen is something I am all kinds of excited for. Having the new one to cap it off is... No words.

I do, but that's because he looks a lot like Darth Revan, and I'm a huge fan of KoToR.
