Early Construct Crafter

Advice

Hello everyone, I had an to play a construct focused character.

The only problem is that it seems like until 5th level there's no real way to get any sort of constructed minion at all.

Is there any way I'm missing to get something a bit earlier?

It doesn't have to be strong or even really effective, it's just when I build a character to do something I feel pretty lame if I can't do that thing until I'm a bunch of levels in.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

You're in luck! One moment...

Check out this and this. ^_^

Thank you very much.

Hmm. I was aiming more for a Wizard, so now I'll have to sit down and decide what's more important for me. My class and casting style or being an actual construct user from level one.

Hard decision, but at least now I know my options.

An ioun wyrd familiar could give you a little of that flavor while you wait.

Just remember- bombs can do a lot of the same thing as some popular battlefield control spells.

They are less for damage, and more for spontaneous debuffs and such based off of the discoveries you have.

Not sure if that affects your decision, but it is worth considering if you are looking at the one with a construct mount.

I think you'll find that not even at level 5 you'll be able to afford constructs. It seems like very late level stuff.

Depends on what you're making. Animated objects are very reasonably priced if a bit limited.

Wood golems aren't too bad, at 8,800 gp.

Iron cobras are only 2,000 a piece.

Caryatid columns are 7,000 - good against armed foes, and pretty too.

Junk golems are a mere 5,200.

Wax golems are 7,000 if you need something that can pass among - or replace - humans.

It's slightly more expensive... but if you need a bodyguard, make an angelic guardian (from Magnimar, City of Monuments). 12,000 gp, though.

Intelligent Items can be construct-like, and you can start with those at level 3. Though again: money might be an issue.

I played a steampunk, construct focused character in Kingmaker and had a ton of fun. That game was convenient for a construct builder though, since we had a) tons of down time, and b) an absurd amount of money. The GM also trusted my system knowledge, so I was able to build some of my own constructs, which was hugely helpful at early levels when other constructs were less accessible, as well as later when my early constructs started needing upgrades. You'll definitely want to talk with your GM about working with you on this sort of character concept, because construct builders are very difficult to pull off with the rules as-written. It might take a while, but once you have your robot army to command it is so completely worth it.

The construct rider alchemist does look hella cool though. Getting craft construct for free at level 4 is really good. Plus you could have a freaking fire breathing robot t-rex, and I mean... come on. Who doesn't want that.
