So, maybe I am confused about the recent changes with animals one can purchase now.

It just needs to be CR<PC Level?

So, a 3rd level PC, could purchase a Dire Riding Bat(CR 2) from Ultimate Equipment?

Sovereign Court 4/5 5/5 ** Venture-Lieutenant, Netherlands—Leiden

Yes.

Grand Lodge

Okay. The little change up had me just a bit confused.

Scarab Sages

The change was to keep people in certain areas from buying a 2PP CR4 Tiger after their first adventure, and wrecking scenarios. I'm sure those folks are now using Bison instead...

Sovereign Court 4/5 5/5 ** Venture-Lieutenant, Netherlands—Leiden

Geez. I'm already having trouble actually digging up the ruling. But as I remember, horses (and maybe riding dogs?) were the only exception to CR < PC Level, and bisons are CR 4.

So sure, a level 5 PC can cause some havoc with a bison, but by level 5, havoc is to be expected.

It's within the Additional Resources document.

I believe the exceptions are horses and CR 1 creatures. Also, the ruling only covers the ARs, so anything from the core book is effectively exempt. (Not sure if that is intended.)

Ah, yes, found it. Indeed, bisons are just as hard to get as tigers.

Grand Lodge

I am surprised there wasn't an exception for Camels.

That seems, like a slip up.

Are you kidding?

Have you seen how well they Grapple?

Grand Lodge 4/5 **** Venture-Captain, California—Sacramento

And they spit.

Grand Lodge

Yeah, yeah.
Still, the Desert Outrider shouldn't be forced to nab a Horse, instead of a more thematic Camel.

If you mean the Qabarat Outrider they get a camel from their mount feature, which bypasses the purchase list, so they still get their camels.

Grand Lodge

I mean "Desert Outrider", as in the concept.

Silver Crusade 1/5 Contributor

To be fair, horses are still very thematic for the role. For example, the Kelishites have a long, proud history of horsemanship.

That being said, it still should probably be amended.

Yep, I did not intend to be anti-camelid in that ruling. They should be on the list of exceptions.

Grand Lodge

Most excellent. I figured that was the case.

I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and ask what about riding dogs and wolves? It seems to me those follow the same reasoning as Horses and Camels are what are allowed for normal (medium)-sized cavaliers, but riding dogs and wolves are allowed for small cavaliers. So it seems those two would also be "standard mounts".

edit: I don't actually know what their CR is (and didn't check, obviously) so this may be a moot point.

Guard dogs and Riding Dogs are part of the core rule book, so they were fine anyway, as are donkeys.

Wolves are CR1

Grand Lodge 4/5 **** Venture-Captain, California—Sacramento

Camels were also CR 1, so they don't need to be errataed in.

I thought there was a rule somewhere that dire animals were not legal to purchase in PFS.

(looking...)

So its not legal to purchase dire animals from the Animal Archive.
But that language is missing from Ultimate Equipment.

Does the AA supersede the UE, due to being the newer publication?

Seems like it should just be a blanket things, but guess not.

It only supercedes it if it says it does. If something is marked legal in one book but legal in another, then you can buy it from whatever legal source it's from.

Shadow Lodge 4/5 *** Venture-Captain, Michigan—Mt. Pleasant

Only dire animal I saw in UE was Dire Bat.

Grand Lodge

Yes. Most Dire animals are unavailable to purchase. Not all.

This did make me a bit disappointed, as there is no way to acquire a Dire Hyena Mount. Oh well.
