Beguiler?

Homebrew and House Rules

One of my players shot me a link to this pdf this morning asking if he could use it. It's obviously some sort of homebrew/3PP despite the fact that it's nearly a dead ringer for an actual Paizo product. I don't have a problem with this per say, but I'm having a lot of trouble getting the balance of the beguiler down. It's a full caster with a f+$+ton of goodies and extra spells known but it's pretty constrained by the spell list.

Anybody have any experience with this beguiler? Any clues on how this would play? Would it completely eclipse an illusion/enchantment focused wizard/bard?

There have been at least a few beguiler conversions on this forum, and if that PDF is the one I think it is, its probably the one with the most replies to it. A quick search and several clicks should be able to verify that. Once you find the thread, you should be able to read through and find out what went into making it.

I haven't done any testing on it, but personally think that it is pretty heavy on abilities. Quite a few people don't agree with that though.

That's ertw's beguiler conversion. This post has a good outline of how it plays. I've been running one since late January/early February and have found it works really well without being overpowered. It is definitely not on the same level as a wizard, but would definitely give the bard a run for his money.

Liberty's Edge

Can I recommend taking a look at the just released New Paths 8: The Trickster from Kobold Press

The New Paths line has had a number of popular classes so far, including the Spell-less Ranger, White Necromancer, Battle Scion, Shaman, and the New Paths Compendium

The class is esentially an arcane rogue type of class that has built in customization through its Forte class feature, which include Acrobatics, Arcane Accomplice, Spell Pilfer and ... you guessed it, Beguile!

While not a full-fledged Beguiler, if you choose the Beguile forte, you can make a class that has much of the flavor. Please check out New Paths 8: The Trickster and see what you think!
