Apprentice feat (non-martial alternative to Squire)

Apprentice

You attract an apprentice into which you can pour your extensive knowledge.

Prerequisite: Character level 3rd, Skill Focus in a chosen Craft or Perform skill, 3 ranks in the chosen skill.

Benefit: This feat acts similarly to the Leadership feat, with several exceptions. You can only attract a 1st-level cohort (referred to hereafter as an apprentice) with this feat, and cannot recruit followers until you have the Leadership feat. You determine your Leadership score according to the rules presented in the Leadership feat, but your apprentice is always at least three or more levels lower than yourself or your ranks in the chosen skill.
An apprentice must devote herself to her studies. Because of this, she must take Skill Focus at 1st level in the chosen skill of her master, and must put ranks into the chosen skill at each level.

If an apprentice gains enough XP to bring her to two levels lower than either your level or the number of ranks in your chosen skill, the apprentice does not gain the new level until you gain your next level or skill rank - until then her new XP total is 1 less than the amount needed to attain the next level and she gains no additional XP until you advance.

If you release your apprentice from service, you may gain a new one by scouting for potential candidates, which requires at least 24 hours of uninterrupted scouting in a settlement where you have made your skills known. This act can also replace an apprentice who has perished.

Graduation: When you reach 7th level, this feat automatically upgrades to the Leadership feat (meaning that you effectively lose this feat and replace it with Leadership).

Graduation Benefits: You gain all the normal benefits of the Leadership feat, except that your apprentice must remain at least three levels lower than you or your skill ranks and must continue to take skill ranks in the chosen skill. In order for your apprentice to be able to be two levels lower than you, she must be at least 4th level, and you must witness her as she creates three works of art worth a total of at least 3,000 gp or have performed at least three performances for audiences of 50 or more while achieving a great performance result or better on her Perform check.
