What would be the best way to build a char that wants to hunt and collect monsters?
I am thinking of a more serious Pokemon inspired char. Can be useless in a fight (by himself) since he relies on having the right monster for the occasion (hopefully), but should have some social abilities (in the most ideal case).

I'd love to have "Face" from A-Team with pokeballs or Oracle with Pokeballs.
It would be for PFS, so PFS-legal would be very important.

I was looking through my books, but with the growing number of books splitting up classes and archetypes, it's getting pretty hard. And looking only maces you focus on some aspects very easily (that's why I love browsing books for stuff like this).

Hunter seems to be the class with the best animal companion. But what If I don't want the best single, but a range of more versatile companions?

The idea seems to suggest either a broodmaster summoner, a beastmaster ranger, a packmaster hunter, or a pack lord druid, depending on which chassis you prefer and whether you want to go more for animals or more fantastical creatures.

All of them have the ability to trade their usual buddy for a host of less powerful ones (with the ability to put feats into Boon Companion to help keep them slightly more relevant). They won't be as powerful as a full companion would be, but it's probably the best fit for your concept.

For the Pokeball-ish concept, the broodmaster summoner might be best, since you can summon and dismiss the eidolons, as well as having summoning abilities to call other creatures from nothingness as well.

Preservationist Alchemist has the right flavor, though the power is nothing special. Planar Preservationist is required for the more unusual creatures.

Honestly, a non archetyped Unchained Summoner with exceptionally high Charisma for more uses per day of the Spell-Like ability will fit quite well. Pick up the Eidolon to be your "Starter" and make use of Summons when it isn't out. Fluff it out so that your character actually summons them from a magical menagerie somewhere in Golarion. Traits can get you face skills. This is more or less how I play my xxxxxx-1 in PFS and it works wonders.

Spell Focus: Conjuration, Augment Summoning, Evolved Summoned Monster are your go-to feats, especially the later of those feats if you want to add an exotic flavor. Superior Summons is also great for obvious reasons. If you want to go hard on the "useless alone" part, start with 9 Charisma. Eidolon is still a thing, and so is the Spell-Like Summoning, even if you get less of it per day.

As for the actual hunting and collecting of monsters? There's only one, maybe two scenarios that actually have obtaining an interesting animal as part of the chronicle at the end, so PFS isn't the best place to play a straight up monster collector. Leave that part to the backstory, or maybe restrict yourself to summoning things you've already encountered.

Thanks.
Have to look up a lot of archetypes now :)

If you're open to third party products there is one pdf called Mystical: Kingdom of Monsters.

It features the Monster Trainer class that casts a zero level spell that captures monsters in it's aura to summon for later. These monsters contribute spells to it's spells known list that are cast through the monster. The bulk of the book is a bestiary of pokemon/digimon/monster ranger-like monsters.

The class itself has some problems which you can see in my review but keep in mind that my review has been updated and is pending a revision due to the problems not really showing up much in campaign so I view it much more highly that it seems in my review. I had to house rule in a means of monster storage and trading plus a restriction of 6 monsters in an aura for a proper pokemon campaign but the product is pretty much functional.

That's sunds pretty cool, but I want to play the char in PFS, so only paizo material that is listed as legal for play is an option for me.
