Alignment Poll

Dataphiles 3/5

I have seen threads where people ask what classes or races people are playing, but not one about alignments people make their characters. After seeing several comments recently about the society's lack of morals I got curious how accurately this perception of our morals reflects what people chose as their alignment. Personally when I create a character I really try to ask myself what his motivations are, and decide alignment on a case by case basis, but after looking over my characters I see that I definitely have many more Chaotic Good characters than anything else.

The problem with this false equivalence is that you could have someone who is exceptionally moral, feels they are doing the right thing... and they are wholly evil in how they do it.

Alternatively, you could have someone who is 'amoral' who is neutral, because they don't get bogged down in the good/bad discussion and just do things.

It's dangerous to ascribe a moral value to behaviour and then attempt to shoehorn it into a belief path.

In a different discussion, someone was mentioning nation-states and where they'd fit on the 'alignment spectrum'.

The answers that came out for different nation-states was... enlightening.

Its true that the alignment chart in general has some flaws to it, and you'll notice neutral is an option so that particular example would be reflected somewhat. I disagree with your first statement though. It is possible for someone with good intentions to use evil methods to achieve something that person is not exceptionally moral. Two great examples from popular media would be Vincent D'ononfrio's portrayal of the Kingpin or the Operative of the Parliament from Serenity. These men had codes that they lived by absolutely, and were working towards a "greater good." Neither of them were good however, and they knew and admitted it. None of this in any way lessens my initial curiosity about what alignments people are playing however. So lets leave the moral debates for another thread, and see what alignments people are playing in this one.

4/5 ** Venture-Agent, Massachusetts—Boston Metro

So, from the seven characters I have that are remotely fleshed out:

LN Seeker Inquisitor of Asmodeus. Big on the 'law and order' aspect of the god. Korvosan. Definitely not evil per se, but very ends-justify-means and views mercy as a shield that lets dangerous chaos survive.

N Alchemist. Focused on knowledge above ethical conundrums.

N Summoner. Political type and proud Sovereign Court member. His experience summoning beings from accross the planes has made him skeptical of the value of strong convictions.

CG Bloodrager. Very much tries to do good, though her rash temperment sometimes worsens matters.

CN Pirate. Mostly credit blob, so beyond 'pirate' haven't fully fleshed him out.

CN Medium. Channeling a multitude of undead souls has made him a little crazy.

CG Cleric. Honestly mostly CG for Caydenite status.

So that's:

LG 0
NG 0
CG 2
LN 1
N 2
CN 2

Characters fleshed out-

Countess Eliesse Velune--Neutral Oracle. Beloved of Zypus and really doesn't care. Basically self involved.

Ari Aren- Neutral good half elf Summoner. NG came from isolation as a child and a subsequent desire to support underdogs.

Marv- Lawful neutral half orc alchemist. Tries to be "respectable" to avoid persecution.

Stenella Alesia Lwellyn- Chaotic Good demon spawn tiefling fighter raised by Sheylnite clerics. Always struggling with nature vs nurture.

Elinee Thesalaki Kalamendes- Neutral good azata aasimar. Bringing an art to golarion with the blessings of kurgess. She is the quintessential hot cheerleader translated into pathfinder.

Shem el Hazaar-Chaotic neutral touched by Groetus cleric who likes to share insanity. He thinks he chaotic good because he's sharing insanity/enlightenment with everyone.

Grania Telos-- Orphaned half orc arcanist librarian raised and abused by Asmodean nuns. Found refuge in the stacks. Neutral due to trust issues, cynical attitude torward goodness. Struggles with her own indoctrination and that she was too smart for it to hold.

Just the PCs I've actually played so far:

LG: 4
NG: 3
CG: 2
LN 0
N: 4
CN: 3

Looking at the creation order, I tended towards mostly good PCs early on (except my first PC who I played the most), and have gone more neutral later.

I also have two more not listed above, because I've never actually played them.

One is a level 2 GM baby that's officially listed as CN, but I don't even remember why I chose that alignment for him. I think N or even LN might work better for his personality. But I'm considering scrapping that whole character idea and rebuilding him from scratch.

I also have a specific idea for an LN character that I haven't gotten around to building yet.

For that matter, I have a less specific idea for a PC that I haven't built yet, who will probably be good aligned, but I couldn't tell you which variety of good. I'd lean toward CG with that one, but maybe NG.

I should also note that three of my PCs have changed alignment during their adventuring careers. All of these were voluntary, not the result of alignment infractions.

I only have one PC that I consider borderline evil, and she's CN. My other neutrals are either truly neutral (generally selfish, but not totally uncaring of others or cruel), or else lean slightly towards good.

My devout Sarenite tiefling monk is LG; my half-elf sorcerer is N, but may be drifting into CN; my aasimar cleric is CG, but she'll never get played because I couldn't get her any XP fast enough; my playtest psychic got retired after his first adventure, he's LN; and my kitsune that I really need to finish building is NG.

So that's: 1 LG, 1 N/CN, 1 CG, 1 LN, and 1 NG.
