Battle Oracles + Grapples

Rules Questions

Lantern Lodge

Hey Guys!

I'm going to be playing a grapple and spell focused rage prophet, and there's a couple of questions I had about some of the Oracle revelations I can take.

First, I want to take the Weapon Mastery revelation for Grapple. The requirement, however, is that I am proficient with the weapon I choose. So, can I even take this for grapple? Am I considered proficient with "grapple"?

Secondly, If I can take the Weapon Mastery revelation, what would improved critical: Grapple do? Nothing?

Thanks guys!

Grapple isn't a weapon.

I should clarify the source of my confusion:
"Weapon Focus (Combat)
Choose one type of weapon. You can also choose unarmed strike or grapple (or ray, if you are a spellcaster) as your weapon for the purposes of this feat.

Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected weapon, base attack bonus +1.
Benefit: You gain a +1 bonus on all attack rolls you make using the selected weapon.
Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon."

If I'm required to be proficient with the weapon I choose, and I can choose grapple, then I am proficient with grapple. The question is if that translates to the revelation.

+1 when you make attacks with... grapple? I've never seen that in my life, but I guess it's RAW. I have no idea how that works.

Good luck getting an answer.

Grapple has no additional effect on a critical hit. While you can critically succeed with a grapple on a natural 20, there is no critical threat range, critical threat multiplier or any effect that is multiplied by critically hitting.

Unarmed Strikes would be the better choice so it's easier to start a grapple, followed by the Maneuver Mastery revelation.

Does bonuses to unarmed strikes increase your grapple check? In my mind it would, but the blog doesn't specifically call out unarmed strikes help all combat maneuvers >.>
