Impromptu Poll - Purging Basic and Elites

Pathfinder Adventure Card Society

Hello fellow PACG members.

I'm curious how people are purging Basics and Elites in Season of the Righteous.

There are two options.

Option #1 (Bookeeping) - Written on the Adventure Path Card and the default way to purge Basics and Elites. "After you begin Adventure 3, when you would banish a bane that has the Basic trait, remove it from the game; when you banish a boon that has the Basic trait, you may remove it from the game. After you begin Adventure 5, do the same for cards that have the Elite trait."

Option #2 (Quick and Dirty) - Option presenting in the Guild Guide as a faster way to set up the box. "To make things more interesting and to help you remove the right cards faster, when you add a new Adventure Deck to your game box after adventure 3, remove all cards with the Basic and Elite traits with adventure deck numbers at least three lower than the adventure deck you just added."

My group has determined Option #1 takes too much time (both setting up the box and recording at the end of the session) so we have opted for Option #2. Curious what other people are doing and why.

I do Option 2 - it's easier and IMO way more interesting.

Our group is doing #1 because the season handout said to and we didn't think about it much. (I know the guide gives both options.)

In retrospect, it is making the banes easier and the boons less lucrative, so we may switch to #2, which we used last season, as it was the official method.

Honestly, Method 1 is better suited for home game play. Where a standard group of players is using the same box session after session.

Method 2 is much easier for Organized Play where many groups use the same box and bookkeeping is much more time consuming. I run scenarios at three stores. Method 1 is not feasible.

1/5 *

In both Guild campaigns our group replaces cards on the fly, which is a third option available in both years of the Guide. It's also what we do when playing an earlier scenario with a box set up for higher scenarios.

If I was playing the Season of... campaigns at home, I'd remove cards the normal way. (Your option 1.)

2/5 *

We run out of a box at a gaming store, so other people might be using it at any time. Also, different groups are at different tiers.

So we use option #2, but we purge cards on the fly. In other words, if we ever encounter a card that we shouldn't be able to encounter, we immediately draw another card of that type from the box (until we get a valid card).

I like option #2 also because it makes the game much more challenging. When I started AD3 we were no longer encountering zombies or rats, we were encountering dragons and things that can rip your head off. So yeah, much prefer to forget about the cards we've encountered a billion times before and start seeing new cards.
