grappling while mounted

Rules Questions

Can you grapple and then pin a foe while you are mounted, without dismounting? For simplicity say the foe is not mounted.

I found many threads about being grappled while mounted, but none of the converse for some reason. Perhaps my search-fu is weak.

Scarab Sages

You and your mount grapple the foe together - probably the mount is the primary grappler with you assisting. (I'm thinking in terms of you getting the mount to sit on your foe or trap it under it's hooves/paws) A truly imaginative GM might let you use a Ride check instead of your CMB. :)

Well, that would be one way to do it, but I was thinking of leaning over and grabbing the foe with my arms, leaving my mount relatively unhindered and free to whale on him while I maintained the grapple. I can certainly punch him without involving my mount, so why not grab?

Scarab Sages

Probably depends on the type of mount. Usually your mount is between you and your foe in some way, so it makes more sense for the mount to do the hard work while you wale on him. :)

Just imagine trying you get your horse to hoof or bite attack somebody while you're holding on to them from the saddle. Works much better the other way round.

Bruno, a handsome and beautiful Tetori who really need to update character sheet, no longer allowed to ride mounts after unfortunate incident.

Abadaran smartybrain lawyers say Bruno can no talk about gruesome incident or tragic aftermath.

To answer question: Yes, as long as dumdum enemy is in reach. What is your reach you ask?

For simplicity, assume that you share your mount's space during combat.

So, your reach extend from every square the friendly and still-living horsey occupy.

You can grapple stupidface badguy one-handed at penalty (other hand is controlling the mount), or you can use both hands with Ride check.

With a DC 5 Ride check, you can guide your mount with your knees so as to use both hands to attack or defend yourself. This is a free action.

Bruno knows you are very strong (unlike some weak horsey that may be dead but Bruno NOT saying some weak horsey died when he rode it because Bruno afraid to grapple Abadaran lawyers), but do not forget higher ground bonus.

When you attack a creature smaller than your mount that is on foot, you get the +1 bonus on melee attacks for being on higher ground.

Bruno now go back to Puddles District of Absalom to grapple litter and mop up water as part of community service for unnamed incident that in no way involved a stupidface babymuscle now-dead horsey.

@Wolfsnap: Well, since Pathfinder has no facing rules (or horses would occupy a 5'x10' space instead of 10'x10'), I figure for purposes of the rider the foe is to the side and for purposes of the horse the foe is conveniently right in front.

@Bruno: Thanks, that makes sense. And I totally missed the "higher ground" bonus. On a totally unrelated topic that has nothing to do with any unfortunate horse-based incidents you may or may not have mentioned, did you know that dead horses can be made into living horses or into undead (but still rideable) horses by magic?

Ooo, dead horses. Now I'm hungry.
