Great conclusion to The Misgivings (Spoilers!)

Rise of the Runelords

Forgive me for poor formatting, this is my first time posting to these boards, though I have read through many threads! For reference, I am the DM of the campaign and we typically have 4-6 players.

Last night (Sunday) we wrapped up yet another successful evening of Pathfinder and RotRL. Our group fluctuates in number of players, but it is always a mix of our 6 core group:

Human Female Cleric - Aurelia
Half-orc Male Samurai - Kunchong
Female Human Wizard - Tolemak
Male Human Bloodrager - Gordon
2 Additional characters that are currently being made, as the previous session they both lost their original characters to a fight.

The 4 named characters above were the ones present for last night's session. When we began, we were just wrapping up cleaning out the Misgiving's. The only place left was the Skaveling in the cave, which they quickly destroyed. They found a few trinkets as well as a Hat of Disguise in this cave (more on that later).

After some milling about Sandpoint, they eventually made their way to Magnimar in search of the mysterious Xanesha and Pug's -Magnimar inscription found on several cages in the basement of the Misgivings.

Upon reaching Magnimar, they quickly found Pug's workshop and paid him a visit.

Sidenote: My group LOVES to perception check and sense motive on anything, living or otherwise. Poor Mr. Pug was no different.

The group was being cautious, thinking Pug was in on the whole conspiracy, so they didnt directly mention the cages found in the Foxglove Mansion. Instead, our Samurai, who has 7 Intellect and is about as bright as a rock, decided to try and bluff Mr. Pug and pretend he was shopping for a cage to hold his pet rat (he doesn't actually have a pet rat). It turned into him looking for a cage that can hold his Dire-rat, and Mr. Pug nearly sold him a cage for 3500g, complete with free delivery and 2 months worth of rat food!

Anyways, upon not finding any new information from Mr. Pug, they eventually made their way to the Foxglove Townhouse in Northern Magnimar. After defeating the pair of Faceless Stalkers (and the Wizard nearly setting the townhouse on fire), they discovered money, a clue that leads to the Seven's Sawmill, and the Deed to the Foxglove Mansion.

The deed was simply meant to function as another link to the Brotherhood of the Seven. However, my party had different ideas. They asked me if they could use the deed to sell the Foxglove Mansion to a potential buyer.

Initially I said no way. The mansion is still under the name of Aldern Foxglove. Well.... my group of players came up with the idea of using the Hat of Disguise to impersonate Aldern Foxglove, go to the Magnimar court, and have the deed moved into the name of his "mistress" Aurelia (the name of the Female Cleric).

I was tickled by the idea, so I went along with it, warning them that if they got caught on a failed Bluff check there would be consequences. They aced all their rolls, and ended up successfully going in front of Justice Ironbriar. He notarized the deed, and they now owned the Foxglove Mansion.

They decided to head back to Sandpoint that very night to attempt to sell the mansion. Dollar signs in their eyes, they rode back and the next morning propositioned the Mayor and the Scarnetti family. The mayor offered them 40,000g as well as titles and discounts in the city. The Scarnetti's offered 80.000g.

Naturally, they handed it over, and are now 20,000g per person richer. The Scarnetti family now owns two Mansions!

It was honestly such a unique and surprising situation, and the way they managed to come up with it, that I just went along with it. They handled everything well and made their roles, so I decided to reward them handsomely. The new wealth they accrued went nicely with discovering a large city, as it meant they were able to get some nice shiny new armor and weapons.

All in all, it was a fantastic session and was easily my favorite I have played or GM'd. They ended up making it to the Shadow Clock Tower and defeating the Scarecrow, so next Sunday they will attempt to climb the tower.

(I scaled up the Scarecrow too high and added a few extra abilities to him, which nearly caused a TPK, but that is a story for another day if anyone is interested.)

While fun, I'm not sure why anyone from Sandpoint would want to own a haunted mansion (and the AP makes it pretty clear that the locals know its haunted, or at the very least, has a very bad reputation.)

There's also the fact that the deed gives ownership of the mansion to the Brotherhood after a set date. So I don't really see any nobles offering 80K for a lease on a run-down, cursed property.

Obviously, it's your game and you can do as you wish, the mansion just isn't meant to be reward, even if the players are clever (short of them forging the deed, which would likely raise the ire of the rest of the members of the Brotherhood, not just Ironbriar.)

Too late to edit, but I apologize if that came across a little badwrongfun. You're the DM and its your prerogative to change whatever you like to tell the tale you wish. What I meant to say, is as-written in the AP, there would be a whole lot of hurdles to clear if the PCs wanted to claim ownership of the Misgivings and even more to turn it into a payout.

My PCs did end up squatting in Aldern's Magnimar Townhouse (though never tried to take ownership), using a mix of forged documents and bribes to dissuade any questions about why a bunch of ruffians were living in a noble's house.

No I completely understand your concern. I was also concerned about the Brotherhood gaining rights to it, however I decided to let it happen since they wanted money and it seemed fun.

As for the haunted house, they discovered the fungus in the basement and knew it caused the haunts, but they weren't able to clear it themselves. They got the help of Father Zantus and were able to purge the house, so that part is at least solved.

I do agree with you that thematically, the selling of the house might not make sense. It honestly caught me by surprise at the time, so I just went with it.

Appreciate the feedback! It's my first time ever DMing but me and my party are absolutely having a blast with this campaign.

Well, as long as everyone is having fun, that's the important thing.
