Need help on Understanding Shapeable Spells, Lower Caster level and Area of Effect

Rules Questions

The questions are regarding the Forbiddance spell: 6th level spell, shape-able and minimum caster level of 12.

When a cleric casts this spell and either deliberately lowers his caster level or is only the minimum caster level of 12, he gets 12 60' cubes of area of effect to work with, being able to subdivide it into 10' cubes - which works out to 2,592 10' cubes that he can use to blanket the area.

What is the rule to be followed when calculating the area of effect itself? Meaning is the placement of each 10' cube under control of the caster or does it start from where the spell is centered and then naturally fills the area until such time as the whole aoe is applied? Can he voluntarily reduce the aoe below that which is determined by his caster level?

Example:

Let's say there is a room that is circular, 30' radius, with vertical walls up to 20' and a dome up to 40', is he in any way required to fill the entire area of effect, or is there a way he can reduce his aoe to only apply to say 50% of the room.

Lastly, can a shape-able spell be implemented in a checkerboard pattern or must all the 10' blocks be contiguous in some fashion?

Liberty's Edge

For a cleric the minimum casting level of a 6th level spell is 11. Oracles get it a lever 12.

The spell speak of "an area" so I would rule that each 10' cubes should be joined to another by a face, but after you have fulfilled that requirement you can place them as you wish.

I will rule that you can use less than the full allotment of cubes. RAW a spell area of effect is limited by walls and line of effect, There is even this little rule in the magic section:

Range

A spell's range indicates how far from you it can reach, as defined in the range entry of the spell description. A spell's range is the maximum distance from you that the spell's effect can occur, as well as the maximum distance at which you can designate the spell's point of origin. If any portion of the spell's area would extend beyond this range, that area is wasted. Standard ranges include the following.

So if our 11th level cleric decided to create a line of 10' cubes that extend as far as possible, he would be limited to a 210' line as the part beyond that would be outside the range.

AFAIK nothing say you should use all the cubes and that you can't overlap them.

If the problem is the cost of the spell "1,500 gp per 60-foot cube" I would rule that you can spend less and affect a smaller area but that is a personal interpretation.

Ok, I was off on my initial cleric level, but basically, there is nothing that gives any specifics on how to implement shape-able spells.

Can we get a FAQ?
