Bear 'Rassler

Liberty's Edge

I was just fiddling around with a concept - a sideshow guy that does wild bear wrestling/combat - unarmed and unarmored, no actual gimmicks. I was thinking about making him an orc, and likely some level combination of barbarian and brawler. 15 points for stats.

What's the lowest level that has the bear beat? I really don't expect anyone to build it for me, but I figured I'd throw the idea out there as a challenge for anyone interested! :)

What are you planning on doing to the bear? Knockdown, kill, tie up? At any particular success rate, what number of times a day? Are you on equal footing?

Liberty's Edge

Well, he needs to be clearly superior, or the sideshow wouldn't last long. I'd say 4-5 times a day on the outside, but if the abilities only worked for 2-3 shows, that would be ok. As to results, KO would be good - anything that was an obvious win, up to and including kill, though that gets expensive. ;)

The idea is to lure others into trying to match his prowess - putting up a stake to try and capture a big purse - again, unarmed, unarmored, and with no magical help.

Just fiddling around with it, I'm not sure if I can make it work lower than lvl 6 or so. I'd like to see it work at a lower level - but bears are rightfully dangerous!

Scarab Sages

Ulfen Beast-Wrestler was made for this.

It was indeed. I was going to go with Strangler...they do look compatible.

Orc Bbn2 (Invulnerable Rager)/Brw3 (Strangler/Ulfen Beast Wrestler)?

Does that look like a possible combo? That's Str 20/24 raging, Dex 13, Con 14/18 raging - CMB +14/+16 grappling...CMD 20 vs grapple.

Grappling damage should be 1d3+2d6+7/9 raging - right?

Maybe, have a look at Secret Wizard's VMC Guide in the Monk Section, he suggests the combination between Barbarian (Savage Barbarian & Savage Technologist archetypes) with the Monk VMC.

Strangler and Beast Wrestler both replace AC bonus, so they aren't compatible.

Also, as much as the flavor of Beast Wrestler goes with this idea, I'm not sold on the class itself. If this is an NPC and the only thing it ever does is try to push around that bear, yeah, it's a good choice. If you ever want to do anything else, I think you're better off avoiding the archetype.

Liberty's Edge

Total NPC...still, if they don't stack. Meh.

...looking at the VMC Guide...

So - any other thoughts on wrestling a bear before - say - 8th or 10th lvl, when heroes are morphing into superheroes?

So let's break this problem down-

You need AC and/or DR, so the bear doesn't murderize you while you're naked
You need STR, BAB, and CMB bonuses, so you can get a handle on the bear
You need grapple damage bonuses, so you can hurt it while you've got your hands on it
You need grapple feats, to prevent AOOs and provide aforementioned bonuses

Yup. Pretty much.

Does he have to be strong or would it be more fun to make him the tall skinny guy? Here is one fun build along those lines

Well Grizzly Bears are CR 4 so lets start there. Figure 4th lvl to be 'even' fight. Half Orc

S 10
D 20 7 pts (+2 race, +1 lvl, +2 Belt)
C 14
I 10
W 14
Ch 8
Urban Barbarian 1 Berserker of the Society for 9 rage rnds/day, Agile Maneuvers, Bred for War Trait
Tetori Monk 1 Improved Unarmed Strike (B), Improved Grapple (B)
Strangler Brawler 2 Sneak Attack w/Grapple, No Dex penalty while Grappling Celestial Obedience Falayna.

Armbands of the Brawler, Dex Belt

Grapple Check = +17 (+19 when raging, add to Dex) BAB +5 Dex +4 Improved Grapple +2 Bred for War Trait +1 +1 Competence Armbands +4 Celestial Obedience Feat

So the Grizzly Bear (CR 4) has a CMD of 24 so you get him on a 7+ or 5+ while raging.

A Tiger has a CMD of 23 so a bit easier.

CMD is 27 (29 while raging) 10 + 4 BAB + 5 Dex + 2 Wis + 2 Improved Grapple + 4 Feat this is vs. their Grapple of +13 so they need a 14+ to grapple you. or 16+ while raging

AC is only 17 base 19 while raging so they will hit you on a 10+ or 7+ for the tiger. You can use your training for Dodge to add 1 to AC and CMD. Or to grab Crane Style and grapple defensively for (w/3 ranks in Acrobatics) CMB + 17 while raging and AC of 23 and CMD of 33 while raging.

I'm trying to avoid magic items - with them, it can definitely get crazy. I know I didn't specify that, but it is something I'm trying to do.

I've been a big fan of the tetori for a while, but it just doesn't seem to work, thematically.
