So looking at how much content pathfinder has for modules and adventure paths and there is somewhere around 300 of them from levels 3-6. I would like to be able to have the PCs go anywhere they want and just throw a module at them but my only concern is when does gear out level the players ? Would a 6th level PC with 50000 gold be considered a 8th level character ? Has anyone ever ran into anything like this ?

For a better estimation of power, take a bit of the PACG method with you.

You start with x gold, relevant to character level, worth of items. At the end of a module, you may trade carried/worn/possessed items around among the party but must then discard any excess of your starting gold, unless you've leveled and can now have more gold worth of items available.

You can stay the same level forever, and slowly collect the preferred optimum gear for each party member as minor improvements (yay, I can trade out my robe of many things for a cloak of resistance +2!), but you'll never actually accumulate enough wealth to affect wbl/cr.

Do you have a link ?

From my own playtests of low power but rich PC settings, effective level goes up by one for every exponential x2 from their actual class level's gold they reach. A party of level 6 characters should have 16,000 gold each, they have 140,000 gold each so they are approximately 9th EPL (16,000*8=128,000~140,000) but are slightly more. This shouldn't never get this bad unless it was intended but it goes to show how being within 25% of gear in either direction doesn't really help or hurt the party.

Ah, PACG is the pathfinder adventure card game. See related forums or better still play that awesome game. But really I'm adapting a sensible houserule for your consideration.

Duh,right. Sorry I'm horrible with acronyms, I've been playing for three years and just the other day figured out what RAW and RAI means...Anyway, both ideas are awesome thanks all :)

Liberty's Edge

If it makes it up to you, I don't know what any of the common acronyms here mean, like MAD or RAI.

I can help!

MAD= Multiple Attribute Dependancey. For when you need too many high stats for your liking, Monks are pretty notorious for this. On a related note SAD= Single Attribute Dependancy.

RAI= Rules As Intended. What the individual reads the written rules to mean. People don't ehh, tend to agree on RAI very often on the boards.

Hope that helps.

Another option might be to look at the kirthfinder docs in this sub-forum the equipment book has a section on limiting found character wealth similar to what was described above. A character would have a set amount of worth they can attune to anything above that will eventually be lost in some manner or another.

Oh, almost forgot, don't consider consumables part of their gold otherwise they will never use them. If you throw them at the party frequently (like bull str potions or a cure here and there) then players wont hoard their pots and die when they have 8 cure serious wounds in their bandolier.
