Vim, Vigor and Faith

Homebrew and House Rules

One thought I had was to create two attributes specifically for magic: Vigor for arcane magic and Faith for divine magic. I mention Vim in the title because it could possibly be used for any other type of magic (for instance, either arcane or divine magic based on Charisma). Plus it's really fun to say Vim and Vigor.

Any thoughts on adding two (or more) attributes specifically dedicated to magic instead of relying on mental attributes like Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma?

I think the system doesn't need more base stats. If anything, a d20-derived system could probably stand to combine Wisdom and Charisma into one stat (say, "Instinct").

But it depends on what magic is like in your setting. What "powers" it? What is the limiting factor that keeps a mage from slinging spells all day? Does he get mentally fatigued? Physically exhausted? Doesn't get tired exactly, but just sorta runs out of mojo? Any answer I can think of points to INT, WIS, CHA, or CON.

Both vim & vigor are synonymous with vitality according to www.thesaurus.com. Vitality is directly linked to constitution within game terminology.

Oh, I know, but it's always seemed odd to me to pair up powers with things that have other uses as well. I mean, in theory, a really smart Fighter also ought to be able to cast spells or a really wise Rogue or a charismatic politician, etc. As far as that goes, the entire Sorcerer class is confusing since it's based on bloodlines and humans seem to have a thing for mating with other beings. Technically anyone could be a Sorcerer if the genes aligned correctly.

Also, there's mental strength and physical strength, so why not spiritual strength as well?
