Clarification on Dispel Magic

Rules Questions

I was going with my party and encountered a couple of clerics of Lamashtu, being a natural fan of her works, my character would've dealt the situation better, but ended up having to join the party in defeating them.

They had multiple spells on them, one of which was Mirror Image. But the situation ended well, thanks to the brawler, a dominated troll, and a couple others. I also helped dispel some of their powers, which helps.

So my question is this; If I know a spell and I see an enemy using that spell, can I target that spell and dispel it, or do I have to identify the spell before I can?

In game mechanics you should use Spellcraft to identify the spell, ie Mirror Image, and then you to tell the DM that you want to dispel the Mirror Image. Practically, however, you can see that there are multiple images based on the DM's description and then attempt the dispel check.

If the spell turns out not to be Mirror Image in the second method, then you are out of luck if you call out a chance to dispel Mirror Image. Does that answer your question?

Regardless of YOUR level of knowledge, your CHARACTER must identify the spell...

I always ask players to roll, as it might be a different spell than they think...

(Harvey's Mirror Image, instead of just Mirror Image).

Personal spell research is the best. :D

Yeah it does, I'll let my DM know and if I'm right in calling out the spell it gets dispelled, if I'm wrong, I've wasted a dispel. I'm glad I'm pretty good at Dispel Magic though. I'm definitely picking up the greater and mage's disjunction, to deal with Karzoug later in the campaign.

Nothing puts a damper on plans like a well placed Mage's Disjunction.
