A new group of Hero's

Advice

Hello, when you start a new AP or a single module and the party must make new hero's. Does the GM give some restrictions of what kind of characters are allowed for the campaign or adventure? Are there some books not allowed ? And do you have draw straws on who's going to be the healbot :) ?

1. That's a hard one. I try to stop the players from going totally crazy, and direct them into making characters that fit the storyline. Campaign traits seem to help with this, especially if they're a little bit better than average.
2. Try to keep your players from third party stuff like Positive Energy Elementals...
3. You don't need a healbot.

As a GM I usually nudge PCs slightly. I think its also a good use of time for the players to discuss what they want to play so many angles and character types are covered (both for classes and personalities).

I usually only allow the 'core four' books (core, APG, UC and UM) unless a player really has their heart set on something. You can make nearly any character out of those books.

I'll agree that you don't need a healbot, but there should be a character or two that can heal.

Oh yeah, sorry about that. To clarify:
Healing after combat is better than healing during combat, but healing during combat is better than raise daid.

This is mostly because you can usually dish out more damage than you can heal in one round.

It depends.

As GM I try to get my players to make characters with backstories that fit what we are playing. As a player I do the same and encourage my fellow players to do the same. Someone always seems to create something that is irrelevant to the situation (such as a fireball master in a steampunk/gothic setting), but we make it work.

We allow any Paizo books. Other books will be allowed at DM's discretion.

Most of our games now revolve around our persistent world (players actions last campaign have effects on this one). Thus they use the same rules which include a stat array and gestalt characters.

This is up to every GM to decide for himself, but don't just act like a dictator and ban this or allow that. Your players won't like you behaving like a dictator. Talk to them. SUGGEST that you don't want whatever it is you don't want and give reasons, then ask them if they're OK with that that. They almost always will be, but if not, then maybe you should all talk about it.

See above.

Your smiley says you know that this is not true.

Some players love playing healers. Some games don't require healers at all. And nobody should ever have to play something they don't want to, straws or no straws.

On a side note, never listen to anyone who says you don't need a healer. If you and your fellow players think you need one then you do. Period. Playing without any healer is for power-gamers and maximum optimizers and STILL requires the GM to alter (in-game) reality to make it possible for them to survive. If you're playing that way, you already know your group doesn't need a healer. And if you're not playing that way, it's very likely that your group does need a healer. You be the judge.

The Exchange

Id probably tell the party the campaign setting, set down the banned list (up to individual GM how much cheese they can take, if you want minimal cheese, tell them CORE only :p), ask them to plan their characters as a group, amd leave it as that. What they choose to come up with as a group is player choice.

With regards to healing, you just need someone to be able to use the stick, and have the stick be available. Expecting someone to be a healbot is a little rough. I probably wouldn't do it either. And I wouldn't expect someone to do something I wouldn't do myself.
