[PFS] Oracle Retraining - Archetype, Mystery, Revelation

Advice

Silver Crusade

Hi All,

One of the newer players in our lodge has been playing a Dual-Cursed Oracle with the heavens mystery and the misfortune revelation. I believe he has just reached 3rd level.

He brought to my attention that he had made a mistake, and had taken the bonus spells from both dual cursed and heavens, and that character was supposed to use the awesome display revelation at 3rd level in conjunction with color spray (which is no longer avaliable as a spell).

Fixing the character is easy, as we just removed color spray from the PCs spells known, however, the character will no longer work as intended. There are 2 options I can think of:

Retraining
I just want to make sure I have my facts straight. The PC can retrain the archetype, and would have to retrain away 2 changed class features (misfortune revelation, and Oracle's Curse) costing 300gp and 10 prestige.

The PC cannot retrain their Mystery, as that isn't a retraining option avaliable in Ultimate Campaign.

Just run with it
I can't claim to know Oracles outside of what the class can give to a Paladin, so I can't really advise on how to develop the character from here. Any Oracle verterans out there that know what to do with a Dual-Cursed Heavens Oracle?

As always, any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I feel for your player. Many people don't realize what effect trading off spells can have on a Heavens Oracle -- it's crippling. Dual Cursed is a great archetype for many mysteries, but not Heavens.

Dip sorcerer, or take sorc for the remaining levels to get all the pattern spells that your Heavens Oracle is going to need. A lot of sorcerers dip heavens oracle just to get awesome display and you can still take other heavens revelations with your feats.

Alternatively, retrain the archetype and go with an archetype that does not mess with the spell list. Spirit guide is awesome that way.

Or just remove the archetypes altogether and play a pure Heavens Oracle. They have great class skills that come with the mystery, and it's a really strong oracle even without other oracle benefits.

I'm flagging this one for being moved to the advice forum, so that you can get even better advice on this conundrum.

In the case of new players making mistakes and ruining the concept by not understanding the build I try to be as lenient as possible. Technically by their build what they had done wrong is take a wrong spell, for most I'd say remove it and play on, no real harm. For new players I'd probably give them two options:

1. Remain dual-cursed lose out on color spray and move forward - still 100% possible to make a good build. (Also, misfortune is maybe the most OP revelation in the game anyway)
2. Go single class heavens only for the color spray trick. Both of these builds are on the higher end of the power scale for Oracles.

Honestly either works, and is usable they may have to refocus their build slightly, but it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm sure others will disagree with me, but I feel like there is a pretty steep learning curve to Pathfinder (depending on your background) and I'm not going to punish you right out of the gate for a misunderstanding. However, I'd also make sure they knew that going forward in a case like this they'll be stuck with what they built.

My 2cp at least.

Options above, or retrain the revelation for other Heavens oracle revelations ( which is half the cost). There is a number of good revelations in Heavens, like Moonlight Bridge, and the dropped jaws looks you will get for saying you DON'T do the color spray trick can be worth it.
