Rules Questions

Lantern Lodge

Ok i have a few questions here.

One, these are in kind of a odd place being Thrown weapons but treating as ammunition in many respects. So I am wondering that since they are thrown weapons...would they qualify for special abilities that only affect thrown weapons?

My second question is that since they are 'normally' destroyed on use like ammo, would you be able to make them "durable" like the durable arrows from the alchemy manual. and if so how much would they cost? The durable arrows in the manual cost a flat 1g each be they bolts or arrows. So i'm not sure if a durable shuriken would cost a flat 1g or if they would cost 4g each (extrapolated from the price increase for a durable arrow as opposed to a normal arrow).

Lantern Lodge

This would also apply to things like pilum

The Concordance

You're more likely to get the attention that your question deserves if it gets moved to the Rules Forum, so I took the liberty of flagging it for you.

That being said, the Alchemy Manual actually calls out Durable Shuriken as being a possibility. They would cost 1gp a piece.

I'm pretty sure Pilums aren't ammunition.

Both are thrown weapons, however, and benefit from Thrown Weapon bonuses.

Sovereign Court

You can have durable shuriken, I think. But keep in mind that durable ammo loses enchantment after the first use.

At least some shurikens shown on Wikipedia seemed pretty sturdy (although at least one of these should correspond more closely to a starknife), so durable shurikens sound reasonable. But a pilum WON'T WORK if it is durable -- it is supposed to bend after embedding itself in an opponent's shield.

Isn't a Durable Pilum just a Javelin?

^It is, but then it actually does its job less well. If the shank does not bend, it is less likely to snag on the ground while still impaling the opponent's shield or even the opponent, who in turn will have an easier time pulling it out (if it doesn't fall out due to not bending), and the opponent might even be able to use it.

For reference: Pilum.

Just remember that durable =/= recoverable.

You won't loose it to damage, but firing from a ship at a sea creature means every miss is lost into the water.

My bigger question is, would they count as thrown weapons or as ammunittion...or both, in regards to what things would affect them, like spells or such?

Turong Tai, and Ascalaphus...you two highlighted my main quandry. As they are thrown weapons that treat like ammo in many respects, which do they treat as. If i were to enchant a durable shuriken would it be a one shot thing like ammo, or would it treat like a thrown weapon?

and UnArcaneElection, i'm aware that pilum was a bad example, i was trying to say that i was not talking about shuriken exclusively...but about the handful of weapons that occupy the middle ground...treating like ammo in some aspects, but being thrown weapons.

We treat them as ammunition in most respects, but don't have them auto-destroy on impact...

So you can masterwork them (300gp plus base cost) and permanently enchant them (priced as weapons, not as ammo).

Houserule, but it hasn't broken any of our games yet. Discuss with your GM, tell him I said it was ok. :D
