Is a nerf to archery expected?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

With all of the errata going around lately, nerfing a great many things, do you think archery will be next? It's certainly a very powerful combat style considered over-powered by many. If so, what form do you think a nerf might take?

In my opinion, the most likely victim is Precise Shot. This one feat gives an effective +4 to hit in most situations. Likely nerfs would be lowering the bonus, so you still take a lesser penalty when firing into melee or perhaps only working on one attack per round.

I don't think paizo cares about archers being more powerful than melee fighters.

I think think anyone cares.

Except people who play without full casters and have the luxury to explore the unbalance between martial classes.

Scarab Sages

If GMs actually bothered to enforce cover rules no one would think archery is overpowered. At least until improved precise shot.

haha, and if it does get a nerf I'm sure there'll be people going "You should have known it was coming, since it was obviously so cheesy and not intended because it received a nerf. It's your fault for using something that would clearly be changed." ... sigh

Precise Shot is like Mobility. It's been around a while and it's not going away. 3.5e compatibility issues, probably.

Archery isn't going to get nerfed. Only melee martials will. Haven't you been following what all the nerfs do?

The archer's worst nightmare

It is easy to remove archery as a threat.

Easiest nerf to archery would be to require Quick Draw/Rapid Reload in order to make extra attacks just like thrown weapons or crossbow.

Not anymore:

Cyclonic

Arguably Cyclonic does nothing against Wind Wall or Fickle Winds as your arrow is being deflected by a spell effect not wind. They do allow you to shoot in the middle of a windstorm which is handy.

I do enforce it, but haven't been GM'ing that long. Do most GMs not enforce it? I figured it added to the tactical requirements.

Soft cover rules are annoying for my group, so we largely ignore them.

Liberty's Edge

Personally, I consider soft cover as "anything you can hide half your body behind and MIGHT not stop an arrow or bullet; grants +2 AC." (Hard cover is, of course, "anything you can hide half your body behind and PROBABLY might stop an arrow or bullet; grants +4 AC.")

It's unlike that something from the Core Rulebook will be nerffed (sp?) after all this time.

I played a game for a year before anyone realized people were cover. By then rthe Archer had already picked up the feats to bypass it. I think it would have made a big difference.
