Hey, my favorite sanity-reducing thread is back! So far I am filled with much existential dread but I haven't thought of anything I totally messed up yet.

I thought I was getting pretty lucky with my opening votes. Ugh. Looks like I was. The last two sets aren't so great. And I don't think those two words work together like that!

Also: three votes in and I see something that does nearly exactly the same thing as my item. I think mine does it better, but... it doesn't play to the crowd quite like this one does. Hmmm. Not sure how I feel about that.

Why have a DC and impose a penalty to the check vs that DC? You can set a DC at whatever you want.

Also a different name in the item title and the title in the item description

I've seen several items that were so complicated I can't actually figure out how to make them work.

What's worse, I have the impression that they are, at heart, *really good* items.

Bleh. Boring, vaguely generic item that rewards good people for being good people vs kinda overpowered item of bloody mcbloodiness.

Dedicated Voter Season 9

This item's name combines a friend of mine's hobby and a word that is one letter away from her place of employment. I have no idea what my reaction to this is.

Star Voter Season 9

20th Century Horror vs. Mythological Mayhem!

Just remember that when you vote, you are not voting for one or the other of a pair of items to be in the Top 32. What you're doing is choosing which of the two is the better item. They may both be terrible, or wonderful, or somewhere in between, but you decide which one is just a bit better.

Don't quit and don't hit the "both items" button. Not voting accomplishes nothing. The more votes that are done, the quicker the better items will rise to the top and the clearer the cut line will be for the eventual cull.

Star Voter Season 9

Wow. I just saw an almost exact match for an item I almost entered. Same item, different name, less spells in the can. Weird.

Is there a way you can tell how many times you have voted? About half of the time I vote, I am getting a "No Date Received" error.

Only if you vote enough times to get a voter status added next to your forum name, so if you get Star Voter next to Twisted Path, you've voted at least 100 times.

I made that mistake on my first vote. Since then I've been more particular about making a choice.

I wonder how much weight people put on grammar vs. choice of words that refer to game mechanics. Or, simple formatting mistakes.

This is my ninth year of submitting to RPG Superstar, and I've always been proud of my items, even years later I'm proud of the items I've submitted.

So while this thread is dedicated to snark, I want everyone who submitted who reads this that they should hold their heads high, even if they forgot the formatting, or didn't come up with a stellar idea on this try.

Because you did something hundreds, perhaps thousands, didn't. You put your hat into the ring, and decided to give it a go. You should be proud of yourself, because I'm proud of you.

I am really thinking about hanging it up until after some culling. I feel really upvoting things on over half the matchups I've seen.
How long is it supposed to be until the first cull anyway, do you know?

TOO LONG!!!!

Well, this item has an...interesting method of fixing the martial-caster disparity.

I just got two items competing that started with "b"s. So a bit of alliteration—"The B____ B____ is better" vs. "The B____ is better."

Yes, I'm fading a little.

Dedicated Voter Season 9

This item does almost as many things as there are words left over in the word count.

Voting ends in 13 days. The cull (or the first cull, if there's more than one) might be in a week. That's not that long.

That's going to depend in part on how heavy voting is. We don't want to do a cull before every item has been considered multiple times, but we also don't want to make people stare at the same unpopular choices more often than necessary.

I expect the first cull to be within 2 days, but exact timing isn't something we're going to know for a while.

DQs are still happening regularly now, as voters bring possibilities to our attention.

Providing hyperlinks to things in the Core Rulebook that everyone uses and everyone knows is not going to win an item any brownie points. One might even take it as a subtle insult to the intelligence and ability of the voting gamer.

Description, I'll just add a line there and under the item I'll say what the item does.

I wonder how the items in the core rulebook are formatted.

Dear RPGSS Contestants:

You were given the template for a reason. This is the third item I've had to vote down because it didn't list things like Aura, Caster Level, etc. And don't think I won't report you if there isn't enough room to fill in the missing values and still keep you at or below word count!

Joke item vs. item that is both boring and pompous.

Is this racist? Because it feels at the very least like an uncomfortable racial stereotype, especially with that last sentence in the description.

If nothing else, RPG Superstar allows people to vent about their frustrations with certain aspects of the game. They get to create their dream magic item that would completely take that one really annoying aspect of the game out of play, thereby making things much less stressful for them as a player.

Monster in a can, monster in a can... oh hey, vehicle in a can.

Star Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 9

Joke item that works within the rules vs. joke item that doesn't work within the rules. Hmmmmm...

Speaking of joke items, this is the third one I've seen today. This isn't RPG Superstar April Fool's edition, people. Also, if you're going to waste your time entering a joke item, and my time reading it, you could at least make it a funny joke.

Marathon Voter Season 9

Wondrous item designed based upon a common D&D typo (no, not that one). I love this. I was almost not going to vote for it, since it's a joke item and grotesquely overpowered (and also kind of grotesque), but its opposition is even worse and not funny, so onwards we go!

Dedicated Voter Season 9

Making an item that requires the creator to be a mystic theurge doesn't instill a lot of faith in your rules-fu in me.

Is it just me or are sea/water-themed items a thing this year? Surprisingly, I found most of them to be decent, at least compared to the rest of what I have seen so far. Must be the time of the year.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16 , Marathon Voter Season 8, Dedicated Voter Season 9 aka dien

Item that has no logic or explanation for why it does the thing it does versus...... an item that, if it wasn't intended to be a joke item, still damn well qualifies as such. Urgh.

While I understand this complaint, it doesn't really bother me. I mean, you don't really have to be a mystic theurge, you just have to take a +5 to the crafting DC. It does show some lack of foresight, but sometimes it's not easy to find spells that make sense for the item.

Unless the item literally states "Creator must be a mystic theurge". :P

All you're old friends are here Ferros... the joke items the unformatted ones, the ones so clearly ripped off of pop culture they are shameless, the gory items, the more than a quarter of a million gold items (actually there's a new record holder), and items with no actual effect!

Are you twitching yet :D
