So I'm a major bibliophile and never more have I ever wanted to play a class than the Tome EAter occultist. It is just soo cool. granted i"ll almost never "eat" another book but man it is so cool for me.
So my question is..
Does anyone know how to use a book as a weapon? I'd love to use a book as my weapon and spell resource.
I mean I know I can pretty much hit them over the head with it.. or I guess throw it. uinsg catch off guard/ throwanything and improvisedw eapn mastery..
but is there any other way to do it?
I really wish there was some way to like.. have the classic rpg magic tome that you open and the page comes to life and attacks (either an image, pure magic, or like R.O.D style), like star ocean 2 or I suppose the books from final fantasy tactics...
So does anyone have any ideas with that?
I dearly dearly want to make my ultimate book user....
I sort of wish this archetype came iwth the ability inset to use books as a weapon. Like a better (waayyy better please) version of that scroll weapon wizard.
I don't have occult adventures yet.. I was mostly waiting to see if anything in it made me want it.. which now it does haha. So I'm saving up for it now. hoping it has something neat in its item list

The occultist can fire lasers and fireballs from the book using the evocation powers ;)

Haha. Oh good idea there on the vamp touch.. I was already planning to have fireballs and such come down. I hadn't considered the touch effects!
Granted I'd still like to bop someone in the face with the book itself someday..
but yeah fluff will handle a lot of it!
Thanks! For whatever reason it never occured to me haha.
Though I was still hoping that maybe in the book was a psychic tome that you could improve and it would end up being similiar to a super costy arcane gun effect with boosts. Makes sense they wouldn't but I could hope haha.
Ahh I need to find a game.
Also makes me want to get metamagic feats instead..
So I don't have to like.. whip a rod out to make a dark hand come from my book far away..

you can use the Evvocation focus powers to make your book shoot lasers, seems very gun-like to me ;)

oh i was mostly talking about how the spellsinger gun increases spell's stats.
but I just realized that a lot of the focuse and powers do most of that anyway hahaha.Yeah. I"m inlove with this archetype.. I haven't even played it and it ousted the alchemist for me.
I should make Leon D. Geeste

BOOKS ARE WODNERFUL IS ALL!
AND FINALLY REAL SWEET AMAZING SUPPORT FOR IT!!!!
I can not deny that I wish I could use words of power with this somehow. It would make it really fun idea of picking up words on random pages to creat spells.
granted i've been reading a lot of konjiki no wordmaster.. Which popped up when you brought up word of power

IT'S MY BOOK, AND I GONNA READ IT!!!
....I was not..expecting that this morning.
but I have no objections. Books are wonderful.

This is how Paizo will allow Goblin Wizards. Nothing says your bonded tome can't be empty, and thus perfectly fine to carry around.
"Only writing steals the words from your soul. Reading does not. Eating written word therefore gives you pieces of another entities soul." -Gip, Goblin Legend and Tome Eater, wearing a +6 Intelligence Headband so he could be understood easily.

What about the Rough and Ready trait? With the right profession (librarian maybe?) you can theoretically use tomes as weapons without using a feat to do it.

Notice that the picture of a Tome Eater in the book is a goblin? Hell yeah. Definitely one of my favorite archetypes.

Haremlord beat me to it--my universalist wizard in our current campaign (Profession: scribe) has the Rough & Ready trait to use his spellbook as a weapon, which works nicely with Hand of the Apprentice. More than once his book has gone flying across the room to bonk a foe on the head for the final blow!
There's also my favorite RPG Superstar item of all time.

That's solidly under the improvised weapon rules. I'd call the average tome a small club... 1d4 to 1d2 depending on size blunt damage plus strength. 1d6 if it's the Oxford Unabridged, but an additional -2 to hit for it's clumsy proportions.
Zwordsman |
haha. Yeah rough and ready and all that stuff I know of. From a game where i was allowed to enchant a masterwork (tool) shovel as a magic weapon. That was fun on a bun.
but most of the time you can't enchant it so it feally feels like its wasted traits and feats.
granted the weapon buff the class itself gets goes a long way
I sort of wish that maybe this archetype had a generic focus set available.
"books" and it basically replicated (to an extent) spellslinger.
So you could enchant the book and it would buff up occultist spells and abilities (only) but come with risks of pain of some kind.
Would be pretty neat.. though the archetype would cost a lot more.
Would also be easier to pull off if there is a "psychic strike" like arcane strike..

I just made a character using this archetype it's a goblin monkey whose bonded tome is a magical version of the story journey to the west. Goblins "Fearing the written word is natural...but when you learn that you can steal the written word back, it makes you all powerful!"
So not only is my character a goof of a goblin, but he aspires to be as money king like as he can be while eating books to infuse himself with God like strength!
Paulicus |
I've seen a PFS player with an Empty-Hand Monk that fought with a book. Personally, I've also planned but not yet played a "Barbarian Librarian" that fights with a book. In both cases, catch-off guard was used (pretty sure on the monk), though then you do touch on the issue of improvised weapons and their damage/enchantability/etc. Still, super fun concept.
IT'S MY BOOK, AND I GONNA READ IT!!!
Fun times!
