Xanthir Vang

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I assume that when you meet this vermin the 'immediate' happens before anyone can temp close locations?

Nasty ....

Albeit the temp closing rule also uses the word immediately.

So perhaps the immediate steps are at the discretion of the phasing player?

Sovereign Court

What's the card wording?

Don't have the card wording but if I remember the rules temp close is the very first thing you do when you know you encounter a villain, before reading anything written on cards.
No?

Attempt to temporary close happens before encounter the villain. Rule book page 16.

There are villains that change how temp closing works (Tancred Desmire comes to mind).

It's generally worth reading a card before you do something that would trigger before the encounter, such as temporary closing or evading, on the off chance the card affects that process.

I stand corrected. Indeed you read the card to know if something will impact temp closing, evading and so on. But then you deal with temp closing before actually doing anything else written on the card.
No?

Hi all,

The wording is as follows

Xanthir Vang cannot be evaded, and is immune to the Poison trait. When you encounter Xanthir Vang, if there are more than 15 cards in the blessings deck, he immediately escapes as he is undefeated.

I thought the immediate on the card would take precedence, but I note that the step encountering the villain occurs after you attempt all the temporary closings, which also uses the term immediately.

I believe I played it correctly to temp close what I could, but I am open to other rulings.

Makes sense to me.

Sounds right :)

Hold please. We've been having a similar discussion reading Wendigo from RotR, and it's pretty complicated...

FAQ posted. Temp closes happen before "when you encounter" happens.

Silver Crusade

Should Xanthir Vang have the undead trait? Story-wise he is definitely undead, and Kyra might have taken him out the first time around tonight if he were undead. (She frosted him good the second time, tho.)

Worm That Walks are Vermin, not undead:

"A worm that walks retains memories of its life as a spellcaster before its death, but is not undead—it is a hideous new form of undulant life."

Adventure Card Game Designer

A worm that walks isn't undead in the traditional sense. When a wizard dies, the worms in the earth become a new body for the wizard. So the worms are still alive, and are thus vermin, not undead.

Xanthir Vang is a Worm That Walks, a hive mind of insects that shapes itself into something vaguely humanoid. In RPG terms, he's not undead, he's a vermin (effectively a sentient swarm).

Added: Heh, guess I'm not the only one up. :)

Silver Crusade

You have convinced me. :-)

Googled "Worm that Walks"

The program director at my personal Nightmares channel thanks you for the hot tip.

I have to admit, I really like that phrase "new form of undulant life"
