Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

This was the topic of a heated discussion during a recent game. It wasn't an issue during the game but it brought up an interesting "what if" debate.
If undefeated, you have to bury your discard pile after the encounter.
What happens if, having buried your discard pile, you do not have enough cards left to reset your hand at the end of your turn? If you are unable to draw enough cards to refill your hand back to your maximum hand size? No discard pile and less cards available than your hand size...
I argued that your character would be dead. No one agreed with me.
I'd like to see an official ruling on this if at all possible.
Thanks for making such a fun co-op game!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Your character is dead if you have to get a card from your deck and can't. No matter why you are getting a card (like reseting your hand all the way to your hand size) or why you don't have enough cards (they are all in your discard pile or buried), you die. Even if the cards weren't buried, just discarded, you'd be dead. Because even in that situation you wouldn't have been able to reset your hand, and thus you'd be dead.

Dying

If, for any reason, you are ever required to remove 1 or more cards from your deck and you don’t have enough cards, your character dies.

See this FAQ.

I'm puzzled by the sentence

" No discard pile and less cards available than your hand size... "

Seems to me (but I may be wrong) you may be playing it wrong.
Except if a specific power allows you to do so (typical example: the CURE spell), you never move cards from your discard to your dack (even if the deck is empty), and you can't draw from your discard if your are just asked to "draw" (which by default means drawing from your deck).

Therefore the fact that your discard pile gets buried doesn't change at all wether you die or not at the end of your turn, because you will only if the number of cards left in your hand + the number of cards left in your deck is less than your hand size (so you can't draw enough when resetting and die immédiately).

... Unless proven guilty by Hawkmoon (BTW, I should add the UPGBH mention to all my posts, I would win time).

I was also confused as to the wording of that sentence. Your statements are the correct way to play this game -- PACG has no notion of "shuffle your discard into your deck if you run out of cards in it" because it isn't that type of game, it's much more similar to MtG in that running out of cards in deck = lose.

Yup, we were playing it wrong! Hilarious! I laughed so hard when I confirmed it. I can clearly remember the question came up during our very first game. One of us asked our host,(also the owner of the game), if we shuffled our discard pile back into our draw pile once our draw pile had been depleted. His response was "I don't see why not." He was flipping through the rulebook at the time... We played almost all of the expansions before we figured it out. We will be starting over sometime soon, I hope.

Thanks everyone.
