Questions about caster level for multi-class characters

Rules Questions

Hi Pathfinder People,

The books says that "for most spell casting characters [caster level] is equal to her class level in the class she's using to cast the spell." If this is "mostly" the case, what are the exceptions for which it is not true? I have heard that some feats (not sure which) allow a multi-class caster to use all their character levels as caster levels.

However, I have also been wondering if caster levels on similar classes might work together. For example, might a magus, who dipped into wizard for one level, add one to his magus caster level? After all, a magus is essentially a wizard crossed with a fighter (i'm not suggesting it naturally go the other way). What about a Paladin who took a level as a cleric (after the -3 thing, and all that)? Thank you all for your input on this question :)

No, it is worded that way because there are various things, including at least one trait, and several magical items, that can increase effective caster level.

Magical Knack, for instance, is a trait that lets you add up to two levels to your caster level, to a maximum equal to your character level.

There is an Ioun stone, orange, I think, that adds one to your effective caster level, and that is not limited to your character level, but costs something like 30,000 gp.

The Candle of Invocation adds several effective levels to your caster level, for a limited time.

Similar classes, unless they says that they do, don't add to caster levels in other classes.

Some PrCs explicitly add one level per level to effective level in a spellcasting class, like most levels of Eldritch Knight and Dragon Disciple. They add not just to effective caster level, but to things like spells known and spell slots, etc.

Thanks for responding. This makes sense to me as a logical interpretation of the language. I also looked through some of the language on hybrid classes, and it specifically prohibits the effects of spells stacking (which is pretty much what I am asking). I

though I find it a bit frustrating also. It seems intuitive to me that related classes would be related in the game. As it stands, there seems to be no difference between a spell power of a magus that has devoted a level to magic as a wizard, and a magus that has dipped a level into fighting. But, I suppose this does level the playing field somewhat, and a fair game is (generally speaking) a fun game.

Thanks for your input.

There are those Prestige Classes that add to your caster level: Arcane Archer, Lore Master, Mystic Theurge, etc. That could be all they meant.

That's mostly against the rules, although there is some limited crossover, and any individual GM might allow it.

If you have levels in both Wizard and Alchemist, and you learn a spell as a Wizard that also is on the Alchemist's Extract list, you can pretty much just add it to your Alchemist list, too.

The Broad Study Magus Arcana allows you to apply Spellstrike and Spell Combat to spells from other spell lists you might have.

Levels in Wizard stack with levels in Witch for the purposes of determining the abilities of your Familiar, with some caveats.

There are probably some other things.

If you can be more specific about what you are trying to accomplish, we might be able to give more specific guidance.
