Advice

Ok, so I was recently invited to a way of the wicked campaign an they are starting book 2 and are at level 6.

I wanted to make a build patterned after Undones sacred fist dex build taking advantage of AoO's but I got to thinking, what about trying it with straight Unchained Monk?

A couple of caveats however that may not apply to everyone but that my DM has allowed:

1) I get the starting gold for WBL so his gear is in place
2) He has granted all characters 2 extra skill points/level
3) He has allowed the MoMS archetype and I can use Style feats still with the exception of flying kick.
4) Yes I took UMD. I have extra skill points and took a trait. We have no arcane caster so I thought I would buy a wand or 2 of mage armor

Here is the build:

Basically, as I see it, In combat my role will be "Mobile Tank", not doing huge damage in one hit but getting many hits/round whenever I am missed or whenever I provoke an AoO.

Yes I know the the DM can just stop attacking me..fine. That doesnt mean I don't stop attacking.

Out of combat my role will be the lie detector with my high sense motive.

What are everyones thoughts? Is it as good as the sacred fist?

Any expert thoughts on tweaking this build?

Goal is lots of AoO, not worrying about going full Attacks in one round.

Is there anything glaring that I'm missing or could be added, the feat progression after level 6 was going to look something like this:

7- Extra Ki
9- Dimensional Agility
10- Dragon Style(bonus)
11- Dimensional Assault
13- Dimensional Dervish
14- Dragon Ferocity
15- ?
17- ?
18- ?(bonus)
19- ?

Ki powers:

8- Abundant Step
12- Diamond Soul

Not sure about the others

Am I in a fairly non gimp decent path. Rest of the party is a full cleric, anti paladin and archer ranger.

You have an agile AOMF and maxxed dex, and full WBL in a low-wealth adventure path, so you'll be perfectly fine. It's painful that your GM won't allow flying kick, because that's one of the the things that allows unchained monks to be highly mobile full attackers. But otherwise, you won't have any problems.

He says no to flying kick because even though style feats say you have to start a flurry of blows to use them, only flying kick specifically has flurry in the description.

So, he's kinda doing me a favor letting me take MoMS and still get style feats.

Maybe I shouldn't go MoMS? But its the only way I can see to get snake and panther easily and use them at the same time.

Do you guys think the Unchained Monk is just better off as a striker and that I shouldn't worry about my AoO gimmick?

There's nothing wrong with stacking AoO through styles, but it's a significant trade-off. By level 6 you're missing out on a bonus flurry strike and an iterative to move, and hope you get three strikes instead of one strike and a hit on you, or nothing. Personally I'm wary of any build that requires the cooperation of the enemy.

If I was going to make a dex-based Unchained Monk I would grab a Cleric level and go Dervish Dance or Fencing Grace with Crusader's Flurry, eventually just using a simple Agile AoMF to make a Ki attacks, and using some of the strange, wonderful things you can get with Cleric domains. But that's me.

Indeed.

Well, if exploiting Master of Many Styles Unchained, there's always going strength-based with two-handed Temple Sword flurry and then grip-changing to defend with Crane Style between strikes (free action one/two hand kung-fu!). And then once that's all set up giving you riposte attacks and an AC boost that makes it seem like you're dex-based, introduce Shaitan Style/Skin acid-stagger strikes and see if you get dice thrown at you.

Thanks for the advice. I just came across a build in a Monk thread with that crane style build with temple sword.

I will make one up and see how it looks
