...with your first PC. where was your mind going?

i still remember my first adventure i ever created, way back in the olden days of AD&D. And i remember the two PCs that played in my game: Lancel the half elf wizard, and Sir Bob of Scratch'N'Sniff, a paladin.
It was a tale told in a night, when the night lasted from 5pm til 9am the next morning, many cans of mountain dew perished at our onslaught. but, in the end, the duo was victorious.

so, what does this have to do with you? well, that is simple; i wish to run an adventure with your first PC. did you start in pathfinder (for those young in life or young at gaming)? or perhaps you are a bit older and wiser, having started with DnD back in the 80s? Do you fall somewhere in between? Do you remember how that PC acted, the class of the PC, a special moment with your first Nat 20?

post the story of your first time with your first PC, and i will choose amongst those who submit. I would like a group of 6, if i get that many submissions.

but first and foremost, this is an opportunity for you to remember your first PC, and go down memory lane with him/her once more, as i enjoy going down memory lane with my adventure.

My first PC was a 2nd-edition half-orc monk with an intelligence of 6 and a charisma of 3. Not sure how playable that character would really be...

My first PC was a 3.5 gnome necromancer/evoker named Gerbo. I was like 8 and the person running the game didn't actually know how it worked mechanically (for example we could cast spells up to the level of points we had past ten in our casting stat, i.e. with an intelligence of 17 I could cast finger of death at level 1) never the less I enjoyed my self thoroughly.

My first PC was a human Invoker in 2nd ED AD&D. I have no memory of my first 20 as it didn't matter much. I had never played before and was playing with a group that had been playing for a while and I had no player knowledge. What I do remember is the party, fighter, cleric, rogue and wizard, where out in the woods at level 5 or 6. The fighter and rogue spot a group of 10 orcs and hides in some bushes. Now the noob, that is me, has this go through his head: "Oh crap, we're hiding from these things, they must be really dangerous." The next thing the party knows, I stand up and cast lightning bolt at these orcs, all nicely lined up in two columns of 5 right next to each other and dead ahead of me. I go for the 10 foot wide by 40 foot long version. Eight of the ten orcs drop dead, even the ones who saved, and the last to pee themselves and run away. The entire party looks at me a asks why in the world I wasted a spell on them. Well, we hid and we never hide unless it's dangerous so I hit em with my lighting bolt. They all died laughing at my over reaction to a few orcs. I loved that character. He was a blaster through and through. His first level spells memorized looked like Magic Misslie X4 and Detect Magic, while 3d was Fireballx2, Lightning Bolt x2. I've never had a character I've enjoyed so much.

It's crazy to think that I created my first character more than 20 years ago while sitting across the kitchen table from my brother, witnessing each other's stat rolls (3d6, choose order) while our DM listened over the phone. He was a halfling thief named Antroth (built with 2nd edition AD&D), who got into all sorts of hilarious hijinks as the counterpart to a big, dumb human barbarian (played by my older brother), along with a party that over the years included a whole host of characters.

Our early adventures were rather pedestrian, fighting goblins and orcs in dungeons. The first impact scene came when we defended a town from a pack of hook horrors, that included me blowing up the leg of the local water tower to put out a raging inferno. Some time later we were tasked with recovering a lost religious relic hidden in a ruined tower. The entrance was guarded by a monstrous carnivorous plant, and our druid, his bard wife, and the paladin who officiated their marriage all insisted on not harming it. The barbarian, mage, and cleric all wanted to hack it apart. They were literally drawing weapons to decide the issue when I snuck forward, tossed a potion of shrinking on the plant, then carefully dug it up and transplanted it, thereby preventing the likely slaughter of half our group by our resident barbarian.

Antroth would have many comedic antics but also some great heroic escapades as well. He went on to duel an evil assassin who tried to kill our prince, developed a halfling resistance force during the ensuing war that destroyed the evil assaulting kingdom's supply lines, infiltrated and robbed the death cult supporters of the invading army, and eventually 'eliminated' the evil warlock advisor of the enemy ruler.

He was quite the joyous experience for a first character, and I played him for almost 5 years. I confess I miss him a bit, and I think it would be fun to give him another run. Count me as highly interested!

Well, how did you play him?

Well, how did you play him?

With 18 wisdom, combat was played pretty intelligent. His name was "Burd", and due to our DM misunderstanding stat rolls, I wound up with ability scores of 18/18/16/6/18/3. Every time I attempted to talk to NPCs, I would give very short sentences, and the DM would roll to see if I said the right words for things.

As CN, and the party tank/stuff hauler, this frequently involved me accentually losing large portions of the team's loot to con artists. Which might have been more of a problem if our DM didn't consistently refuse to run the game while sober.

* * *

Then again, my second character was a NE face-stealing changeling assassin, who gradually killed off all the campaign's main quest-giver NPCs until all our quests involved him secretly telling the party to pillage "evil" monasteries and bring him back all the "powerful artifact" silver candlesticks and gold chalices they found. The DM had asked us to all play "characters with a single, hidden criminal insanity," not realizing how far I would take it, and I eventually died to falling rocks.

Awesome sauce

My first PC was an Elf Rogue...Filios Philandril. We were playing Advanced D&D, 2nd Edition. He lost his hand as part of a monster crit. However, since he fought with two weapons, I had a dagger fused into his stump. So, his two weapon attack was Longsword/Dagger moving forward. He was part of a party that completed the Temple of Elemental Evil. I would love to resurrect him in 5E.

My first character was when I was in 6th grade. 3e human fighter. His background and personality consisted of a cool headband that I (crappily) drew. He used a greatsword and wore chainshirt. I remember making him Chaotic Neutral because I wanted to do whatever I wanted basically.

I remember very little else about him, but boy was it fun figuring the whole "roleplaying" thing out as a 9 year old. Or 10. I forget.

My first character was a Fire Genasi Fighter in 3.5, who eventually took Sorcerer levels for fire magic. In the homebrew world the GM made, Genasi were typically enslaved and forced into hard labor. My character led a slave revolt and killed the overseer with his pickaxe-he worked in a mine-and helped his fellow slaves to freedom. He... regressed a little from his heroic origins, but I was 11 when I played him.

He did give up his fondest memory to a mind-flayer to save the world though, so there's that.

Grand Lodge

My first PC was a human magic-user in a game of 0E-1E back in 1978. We had the Monster Manual, the Players Handbook, the original white box set (0E) and original D&D supplements I-IV.

The quest was to kill a white dragon after we manuevered through a traditional dungeon built into the side of the dragon's ice caves.

My MU threw a lot of daggers and darts, and fired magic missile once per day.

He got to 5th level.

We entered the dragon's lair. The DM decided to call it a night... and we never got back together. Kinda sad.

Keith

P.S. Yep, I'm old as hell and dry as a bone

my first PC was a 1st edition elf fighter/wizard.

lots of fun times with him. assembled the rod of seven parts. then shattered it again.

pissed off two arch devils: Geryon and Beelzebub. got turned to stone by a basilisk, and even out witted a Lich illusininst, beat him at his own game.

ended up level 18 fighter and level 18 wizard.

and still carried the same short sword he used at level 1.

well, since i have some responses to this, i shall now flesh out character creation requirements and what not, and at the same time, let everyone know that i shall close recruitment on wednesday, the 29th.

this will be utilizing the Pathfinder rule set.
All characters will be 3rd level.
25 point buy
max hitpoints
remember, make your character as you have posted. so if you have a elf wizard/fighter, then remake your guy as a wizard/fighter, not as a cavalier/warlock. doing this defeats the purpose of this walk down memory lane.

special note:
if, when you last played your PC, and he/she/it was still alive, then weave that into a backstory. for example, JDPhipps mentions his pc giving up his fondest memory to save the world. JDP could say that his pc went into retirement as a rancher content that he saved the world, but now he wishes to perform one last adventure. So he went out into the world and stopped one night at a tavern, as we all know that all good adventures start in a tavern with a shadowy character in a shadowy corner of the tavern.

My first character was an elf (back when being an elf was a full time job). I think that was the DnD boxed set. Pretty sure he died to giants...

Very first character was blue box wizard, died to petrification by a medusa.

Grand Lodge

1980. First character was a human Paladin named Bytor (yep, huge Rush fan).

Started the campaign late, so I was level 1 when the rest of the party was a few levels higher. Finally made it up to level 4, then put on a Cloak of Poison. Dead. Thank you Nessus Shirt Company.

Hard to believe I continued playing after that...

i see that our fearless paizo staff has moved my thread from the recruitment area to the gamer talk area....hopefully they move this back, otherwise i shall have to make a new recruitment thread...

My first PC was one that someone didn't show up to play, so they asked me to sit in. This was in 1985. I had no idea what to do, but somehow caught on and ended up leading the party. The other two players were a chain smoking misogynist with anger issues and the other was an obsessive compulsive who washed his face every 5 minutes like clockwork. He was also a 15 year old college freshman and his dad, who wore different costumes all the time, lived on campus with him. I'm still friends with the DM to this day. I have no idea what happened to the other two.

I had two firsts. Ended up invited to two different games at same time. But technically one was fleshed out first so I will use her.

We Gestalted. Trust me what a way to come into gaming. O.O I was so lost. But I will focus on the half of her that was her main part, not the wizard, as her wizard side was only picked up since someone said it would be good and I didn't master that class at all.

She was a 3.5 Druid that eventually went the shapeshifter route. She was all about changing forms to suit the needs of the group and believed whole heartedly in the concept of change. Nature was always moving evolving so should the world and so should she. I didn't have the system mastery until way later in gameplay to fully utilize her but she was usually the scout/face of the group. We rolled stats in order and I got meh physical but great wis and cha. So they made me the face cause it was fun for them to tease me and put me in the spotlight.

Funniest moment was when we met the big bad. We didn't know who he was at the time, because he showed up as an old man with a moral quandary. And I came up with an option outside of the group.

"I have a man who wants to save the world. Which path should he chose? Join everyone together and rule them all? Or conquer them all to put fear into their hearts to join behind a good leader?"

Most the party voted for the former and I said. "Neither, He should teach the people, to take care of themselves and live with what they have. An independent man is a more loyal man to those who lead by example and will follow without being asked."

I got lots of stares and a laugh. But GM told me after game was finished that he had to switch main bad guys because I succeeded so well in influencing him to my way of thinking. So his second killed him and took over ^.^

Anyways her base premise is a face style druid who loves shapeshifting.

OD&D, first copy run. Father Kirkman, a cleric. Since I was one of two DM's I only got half the playing time.

Fra Kirkman died @ level 9 or so and was reincarnated into Dian Mac Diancecht, who became a demi-deity, and killed Orcus.

Wait this is about characters, not.... hold on i gotta switch gears here...

If I recall correctly my first character was an elf (indeed back when elf was a full time class). had gotten the re-released black box for my birthday from grams cause I asked for it (she was awesome, RIP Grams). Was 11 and new to RP so the elf was, well, not very deep in the story department. As I recall we all died using the pregen'd adventure, but hey, we all have to start somewhere. Wow come a long way from 1991.

A Dwarf named Ringlerun, he was disintegrated by an Elf, my second was a Dwarven Cleric named Bjorn, he was disintegrated by a Beholder, then a Halfling Thief named Greegan, he was disintegrated by a Beholder, then a human Druid named Thelzoun, he was mind raped by mind Flayers, then disintegrated, then I got lucky and made Orion Whisperain a plucky little Halfling Thief that retired before getting disintegrated:-)

Egads, I don't remember his name, only that he was a Basic Set Elf with a potion fetish, maybe 3rd level. Not sure how far he got as the whole "lease is up, Momma's gotta move" struck.

First character that might still be playable was a 1e AD&D Thief that was transmogrified into a Green Slime Thief. Oozing Death. Still don't remember his name, just his misdeeds. Ate the wizard on the privy from the insides out. Ate his henchmooks, moat monsters and every edible thing in his castle/fortified wizard's tower. Became an honorary member of that GM's proto-Undermountain (a few years before Forgotten Realms was on anyone's radar, quite a few years before Undermountain was published, but the same megadungeon o' doom concept).

I missed some important details in earlier post. Gerbo often collected the body parts of his fallen enemies as trophies (and sometimes to reanimate), he was rendered 3 inches tall and permanently green in a freak rod of wonder accident, and he saved the city of [I don't actually remember] by returning the sacred doe stolen by the drow.

In terms of creating a character should I assume that Gerbo never discovered and then immediately played with a rod of wonder?

I guess I might as well try statting this out, though I'm not sure how playable the character would be. (Went with unchained monk/regular orc, because they seem more similar to their 2e versions than core monk/PF half-orc)

Unchained Monk

My first character was so long ago I don't even remember what it was. Most likely a thief in AD&D 1e because I love playing thieves, but that's just a guess.

started building Gerbo, still working on equipment and fluff. Can he start with undead controlled using command undead?

@RizzenMagnus: Working on statting up my halfling thief Antroth and have run into a difficulty. My DM created a luck system of bonuses for me (limited resource, could be applied to saves, attacks, thieves' skills, or nonweapon proficiencies) and I am trying to find a way to replicate it. The closest amalgam would be to go Rogue and multi-class with Bard (archaeologist), but you said you would like us to stay to the same original class. Is this within the scope as it is the best way to recreate the character concept even though the class structure is adjusted?

@wanderer82: sounds like a plan.

A druid also knows Druidic, a secret language known only to druids, which she learns upon becoming a 1st-level druid. Druidic is a free language for a druid; that is, she knows it in addition to her regular allotment of languages and it doesn't take up a language slot. That's a complicated answer.

My absolute first was an AD&D Paladin in Elementary School. I think I may have been too young to fully understand what I was doing, though. Died against a Triceratops.

After that, a Rifts Cyber-knight in the 6th Grade. Last I heard of him, he was stuck in the world of Final Fantasy IV with Chun Li.

I had a long RPG dry spell after that.

The next one a couple of years ago (I told you it was a LONG dry spell) was a Halfling Sorceress/Dragon Disciple in Kingmaker.

Haha, thanks for taking me back memory lane.

I had 2 first characters.
One was an Elf in DSA System, being a mixed martial/Caster(I guess the Pathfinder Equivalent would be Magus). The pity is I spend more time creating the character(including painting a portrait/full view) than I spend playing it.
I was very involved with the idea, backstory and the characters personality traits, but the GM was not very involved with the game.

The second character, one I got to actually play for a reasonable amount of time, was in an early edition of Shadowrun. Was a spoiled brat of a girl with rich parents, who tried to compensate her lack of experience and skill with gimmicks and technology. Ended up like a love child of Harley Quinn and Batman.(Not that I had any interest in either back then, I came up with things on my own, I just use this reference to better explain in a frame people can relate to).
Ultimately, she ended up stealing new technology from a Dragon who got mighty pissed about it, and she was basically forced to go into exile, but did so rich and famous.

Not really a Pathfinder equivalent for that one, but I thought I'll share it nonetheless. Best of luck with this endeveaour

Dark Archive

Oh wow. This sounds super neat. I would definitely throw in the idea of my very first character, but it was such a horrid design as I was in 4th grade. It was an Oriental Adventure's campaign (3.5) where my character was a wizard (Wu Jen)/fighter (samurai) multi classes elf. And most traumatic moment was trying to save the party's cleric and having her arm bit off by a dragsaving the party cleric. Needless to say it greatly reduced her effectiveness with a sword. But she had some nice big blast spells which was fun.

Silver Crusade

My first PC is still one I harken back to with found memories and stories.

It was back when carrion crown had just come out (so, about 6 years ago? Wow I'm getting old O.O) he was a paladin.

He played the moral compass for our party back then and always had to keep the gnome bard and halfling rogue out of trouble. CC spoilers! he fought the spirit of the axe murderer whos name now escapes me after the afore mentioned rogue fell to it and the other members proved useless due to incorporeal rules.
He stood against an entire mob of townsfolk to defend "The Beast" after he discovered the truth.
Stood his gound agaisnt a swarm of undead and cultists to defend the party after a fear aura lead to EVERYONE else save the cleric running for several rounds.
And his greatest moment perhaps, one rounding the demi-god demon after it had grabbed the entirety of the party with its tentacles... Ahh. I'll get started right now!

Ahh, he was selfless, though I remember him scolding a beggar for begging, right before he showed him how to fish.

Rorek, I think your point buy is a little high. But sounds like a very interesting character.

Yay, we have a fourth!!!!

As someone newer to the roleplaying party, I started out playing PFS. My first character was a lovely tengu druid named Taako. I wish to take a moment to recognize her here, as she died due the unfortunate illness known as PFS-illegal-itis. When I started out, I didn't know about the additional resources section, and used several core concepts in her character that were only met to be in the safe confines of a home game. It was a moment of ignorance that I shall forever regret.

Rest in peace, you poor, dumb bird.

Your awesome design shall remain forever in my sketchbooks.

Would love to play, my first character was actually Deko, a custom Barbarian variant class based around unarmed damage (I basically combined Monk and Barbarian and called it Raging Fist. I still have the class build if you wanna see, and can convert it to Pathfinder if allowed. Otherwise I think I'll go with Brawler and the Varient Multiclass Barbarian.)

Silver Crusade

Will drop the wisdom.

since im going old school with this, i may have to go old school with my campaign realm...used to do both Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance.

and i just so happen to have started reading a dragonlance book, weasels luck
so i think this will be set within the dragonlance realm...
i may change my mind. a lot can happen between now and tuesday.

deko, go with the brawler. keeps its easier for me to reference on prd.

@Deko: There's also the Brutal Pugilist barbarian archetype, which gives a barbarian some monk-like stuff and can always learn the unarmed-boosting rage powers.
