Ruby Phoenix Tournament Interest Check (Houserules)

Recruitment

Hello board people,

I've been itching to get into some more PBP lately, and my job recently informed me that a bunch of my work is cancelled for the summer so I might actually have time for another game.

I recently ran a playtest of the Unchained classes, and thought the monk was really badass. I also live in China and have for several years now. These two things have combined into a hankering for some Wu Xia style role playing.

I am considering running the Paizo adventure module The Ruby Phoenix Tournament with some house rules. Here is what I'm thinking:

Players: 4

Point Buy: 17 (no lower than 8, or higher than 18 after racials at level 1)
Level: 10

Races: Core Races, Catfolk, Kitsune, Nagaji, Ratfolk, Samsaran, Tengu, Vanara, Vishkanya, Wayang
Classes:Brawler, Cleric*, Fighter, Kineticist (must switch to full version once on d20pfsrd.com), Ninja, Samurai, Shaman, Slayer, Sorcerer, Unchained Monk, Warpriest* (*only of deities below)

Deities:Abadar · Daikitsu · Desna · Fumeiyoshi · General Susumu · Hei Feng · Irori · Kofusachi · Lady Nanbyo · Lamashtu · Lao Shu Po · Nalinivati · Pharasma · Qi Zhong · Shelyn · Shizuru · Sun Wukong · Tsukiyo · Yaezhing · Yamatsumi

House Rules:

  • Automatic Bonus Progression
  • Stamina and Combat Tricks (Free to everyone)

Would anyone be interested in such a thing? Questions or comments are welcome, thanks for your consideration.

  • Interested, absolutely. Can do? Not really. I'm going on vacation for about ten days, leaving on Monday.

Good luck with it though dude.

    Liberty's Edge

I might be interested in seeing this develop. I have a kitsune sorceress who hasn't gotten her chance to fulfill her destiny yet, and I don't get the chance to go eastern in RPing much. I can't say I'm as familiar with 'wu xia' style roleplaying, so a primer or two might be good, but I'll watch this thread nonetheless.

    Grand Lodge

    dotting

Well, this isn't a game yet. So dotting is fine I guess, but don't bother making a character. If there is sufficient interest then I will make an actual recruitment thread.

If you want to learn about Wu Xia there are a lot of Chinese action movies out there. Here is an article to get you going.

    Potentially interested

    Grand Lodge

i was in a pbp that unfirtunately died early that was based on wu xia. i have a character concept in mind and am intrigued.

Would love to play a whitecape vanara in this kind of setting :D. Most likely play as a brawler for some hardcore CMB & CMD bonuses.

I'll say that if 10 people show definite interest then I'll move forward with this.

Sounds like it could be quite fun.
    interested.

I always wanted to try this when I was doing more PFS. I would be down. I love gladiator type combat stuff. So did you want us to submit characters or is this still just interest check?

Ooh, I'm interested in doing a aerokineticist or perhaps a monk/aerokineticist

How does weapon attunement play with people who don't use weapons?

I would count unarmed strike as a weapon I guess. Looks like four people showing solid interest so far. Six more and this becomes a recruitment.

Natural weapons would just function as regular weaponry, I'd think? Like how a bite attack is still a weapon, even though it isn't a manifactured one. I don't know if it'd interact with the kineticist attack ability at all though.

Any way, this game looks really interesting, I like that you're focusing on a subset of fluff.

Is there any particular reason you can only use the unchained monk? I get that it's better than regular monk, but it does cut off a lot of interesting archetypes.

Looking over the magic item progression rules, I really dislike how they've axed weapons and armor with a full bonus of above +5 altogether - that doesn't seem neccesary.
On the plus side, it does allow you to pick up all that other stuff you seldom get to use in game, because all the money get spent on stat boosters. I think I like it.

Edit: Would you allow Magus or Bard? Both seem fairly wuxia in feel to me, although especially the magus. Bladed Dash and all that.

I'd also stick the witch in there, but that's probably just me.

No they haven't. You get your enhancement bonus from your level progression, but then you can buy up to +5 worth of other features on your weapon. You can get up to a total of +10 just the same.

And them removing the plus from unique weapons and armors makes them more flexible. I know of several cases where I wanted a particular special ability but I didn't like that it was only linked with a specific plus.

    I think they did. Take a look at this;

Automatic Bonus Progression, Magic Weapons and Armor wrote:
In this system, magic weapons, armor, and shields never have enhancement bonuses of their own; those bonuses are granted only through attunement. Any weapon, armor, or shield special abilities on attuned items count against a character's enhancement bonus from attunement. To determine an attuned magic item's enhancement bonus, subtract the cost of its special ability from the enhancement bonus granted by attunement. (This applies only to special abilities whose cost is equivalent to an enhancement bonus, not to those that cost a flat amount of gold pieces.) For example, if a character with a +3 enhancement bonus from weapon attunement wields a keen scimitar, she subtracts 1 point of her enhancement bonus (for the cost of keen), leaving her with a +2 keen scimitar. If a character doesn't have enough of an enhancement bonus to afford the special ability (such as a 4th-level character with a vorpal longsword), she can still use the weapon's power on its own, but the weapon gains no enhancement bonus.

Am I reading this wrong? I hope I might be, but I don't think I am.

Doh, I was wrong. However, this makes specific items that much better as they don't do that.

Yeah. You're right about that. I'd better go look up which ones are good.

Edit: Hmm. I'm considering a sword saint samurai. It's a shame you have to challenge to make Iajitsu strikes, you could've made an interesting opener move if it could have been combined with hurtful. It still might make for something good though. I'll mess around with it a bit.

Edit2: How do we figure out hit points?

    The Exchange

    Color me interested.

Need four more people to show interest. I will handle that stuff in the recruitment thread Dragon, if/when there is one.

Interested. Question, only unchained monk, or can we also stick with old style to have access to archetypes? Also, what about PrCs that are specific to one of the classes you mentioned?

I will probably allow normal monk too if this takes off.

Well, in order to bump this to the top to get more interest, and to show my commitment, here's Vaki Stormrider. He's Inspired by the image of the monkey king riding a cloud.

    Shadow Lodge

I usually play AP's, but could be down for a module one-shot.

Given the number of games that fall apart and the length, I'm willing to do a module.

So, how close to recruitment are we?

I'm still gauging interest as stated above. I like to have a lot of choices when putting together a party. If this doesn't garner more enthusiasm I may try to run another one of the game ideas I have. I have many ideas and very limited time.

Well, by my count I show 13 people who have taken some sort of interest.

    Oterisk
    Daynen
    grimdog73
    thunderbeard
    JABIII
    Movin
    Ashe
    Philo Pharynx
    The Dragon
    PirateDevon
    JasonX
    zimmerwald1915

The GM did say "significant interest", though. Of course I know a lot of people who simply won't take significant interest in an "interest check" thread. They don't want to put in effort for something that might not ever go live. We've all seen interest checks that never panned out.

    Here's my "significant interest" count.

Philo Pharynx - made a character (that will need to be revised in three days)
    Daynen - gave concept
    grimdog73 - said he had a concept
    JABIII - gave concept
    Ashe - likes gladiator-style games
The Dragon - exploring rules options
    JasonX - exploring rules

That's 7 for a 4-person party. If just one of the others chimes in we'll have two options per slot.

I am interested, just figured it would be best to save my focused interest until a decision as to whether this game was going to fly or not.

But assuming I might tip the scales I have this idea for a Samsaran Shaman. Would you have any issue with re-flavoring of spells to fit the theme of Paper/ink caster? (no mechanical differences, they do the same stuff. Just look different.)

Summoning paper tigers (SNA) and rooting people to the ground with sealing tags(Hold person). That sort of thing.

Alright, well, thanks for the interest guys. I'll give this some further consideration as the next several days play out, to make sure I'm really interested and really have the time to make this a thing.

I've had plenty of games die in the past for lack of one or the other on my part, and I don't like wasting players' time. As stated before, if this does go live, I'll make another recruitment thread for it and link it here.

This interest check thread is now closed, while I consider.
