If a bane has multiple checks to defeat, such as "Combat X, then Combat Y", and I fail at the first check, do I still have to attempt the second check, even though I can't defeat the bane anymore at that time?

If multiple checks are listed on the card with “or” between them, choose one of them. If there’s a “then” between them, you’ll need to succeed at both checks sequentially; you must attempt both checks, even if you fail the first, because failure often has consequences.
It's in the rulebook under Attempting a Check.

I think there is a base Villain in Wrath that let's you get away. He says something like if you fail at the first check... is evaded. But otherwise you have to attempt the secondary check.
Yes thre is the summoner and his eidolon, if you failed to defeat the summoner, you don.t get to fight the eidolon.
