So everyone can agree they're smart people with a lot to say about current social and political issues, the problem I run into is they derail every other darned thread with it, food years now :-)

So in an effort to meet in the middle I purpose this thread to hopefully cut down on the derailments while also giving them somewhere to still get their debate practice in.

Now, remember to keep it civil, if you start to feel upset just walk away for a bit, hug something (tree, dog, wife, whatever you want) so grab a cup of tea, enjoy a crumpet and watch these titans of societal discourse have at it :-)

The assumption that two extremes must meet in the middle is a specific logical fallacy. Its far too easy to simply take a more extreme position and move the "right" answer along with you.

Wow, no, we don't do threads calling out other posters.

There's a reason most of the Titans are imprisoned in Tartarus.

"Truth is in the middle" is a fallacy, but I think the OP was saying more, "Meet in the middle to duke it out". Both sides do benefit from being able to hear each other out and discuss things—if your opinion is firmly to one side or the other, but your "openness" is in the middle, I think it works out.

Anyways, I saw you're shouting out to smart people to talk things out here. I'll let you know if I see any.

*Looks in mirror*

Oh hello handsome

Thanks but you shouldn't be worrying your pretty little head about any of this

I'll keep looking.

I'm just wondering what "food years" are.

It's kind of like dog years, except much shorter. Except Twinkie years. Those go a bit longer.

Now I want to feed Twinkies to my neighbor's dog to make him immortal.

Twinkie lifespans are measured in half-lifes.

All existing Twinkies were created in a manufacturing accident back in 1953. They've just been working through the stock since then.

I'll feed twinkies to my cat. It's already well known that irradiated cats have 18 half-lives. Imagine adding twinkies into the mix!

On Monday, when people are in the office.

Oh god. Our days are numbered. This must be what the ancient Atlantans felt like, fifty years before the city sank, when they were using the internet and someone threatened to close one of their forum threads as soon as the weekend was over.

Civil discussions can't have nice things [/joke]

Looks like a single bag thread.

So the premise of this thread is to discuss the "problems" with engaging in civil discourse with those with whom you may not not agree with ... really? To be clear, voicing your viewpoint which may be counter to the OPs position, or the position of others in the thread is the nature of civil discourse.

I cannot see this as being a good idea in any way and quite counter to engaging in any kind of civil discussion.

No, I think the premise of this thread was to pull discussion off of other threads and have it here instead.

Of course that rarely works and the derail that prompted this one was basically over before this thread was started so it's kind of pointless.

ah, gotcha ... so this would be more of a "please move all derails to this thread" thread, then? More to the point, if that is the case, I apologize for trying to stay on topic. ;)

Its better to call their mothers.

No. Spammers are to Google as The Trump to the Media; if you call them out by name, the attention will only draw them more. I recommend ignoring them and focusing your attention instead on procuring Korean BBQ.

If you must, build a fiendish ventriloquist dummy simulacrum of the spammer, curse it in the name of He Who Must Be Blamed, and drive nails into it's dummy brain while playing any audio book read by The Trump.

I proclaim that thejeff is WRONG!
