One of my favorite seminars at GenCon every year is "Auntie Lisa's Story Hour." It's basically just Lisa Stevens sitting around and reminiscing about her time in the industry. Especially as someone who's been roleplaying for a long time, it's neat to see the other side of all those shakeups.

Agreed. Her blog posts to that affect have been riveting, and I can only imagine it's even cooler to hear that sort of stuff live!

I'd love to hear some backyard gossip about Ars Magica, White Wolf, Wizards during the Magic the Gathering launch, and her time working with the RPGA and Greyhawk setting.

The Designers and Dragons books talk about ALL of those things in detail!

I've got to get me that book. Do you recommend the 4 books 2nd edition over the huge hc by mongoose ?

I still remember Erik from the Canonfire days. It's been a long time...

I've never seen the hardcover edition from Mongoose, but my understanding is that these 4 are greatly improved, expanded on and added to, so for that reason alone I'd go with these.

Well the HC looks great and it seems at least semi collectible and I know where to get it quite cheap. So it tickles the collector/reseller gene.

The 2nd edition is more complete but I really don't like the covers. So it tickles the completist gene.

I'll probably just get both ;-)

Dark Archive

I think I still have the issue of Dungeon with Wolfgang Bauer's first adventure. I'll need to look for it.

If it's in the first 80 or so issues, I've definitely got it (along with the first 270+ issues of Dragon ...)

I have a rather simpler story ...

I too started subscribing around the same time you did (issue #43, IIRC). But I kept my subscription going until I finally let it lapse somewhere around issue #275.

Fairly early on (though after I'd been subscribing for several years) I decided I wanted to get the earlier issues, and I was lucky enough to come across a fellow gamer who had subscribed for a brief period in the early days, and had all but three or four of the first 20 issues, plus a selection of later ones, and most issues of "The Strategic Review". Even nicer was the fact that as they were going to a home where they would be appreciated, he offered to sell me everything he had at the cover price, provided I bought the entire lot (including a few issues I already had) to save him the bother of listing them individually.

Over the next year or two I kept my eyes on the usenet newsgroup rec.games.frp.marketplace (we didn't have eBay in those days ...), and managed to fill in all the gaps in my collection except one - the same issue #1 you're still missing. Every now and then one would show up, but never at a combination of condition and price that tempted me. Eventually, though, I gave in, and paid the asking price for a copy in very good condition.

This was quite some time before the CD compilation was released, which knocked the bottom out of the market for all but the rarest issues, and significantly reduced the demand even for those. Current prices on the used market do seem to be approaching what I paid (although the dollar doesn't buy as much today as it did back then!).

...it's not surprising I am fascinated that I see how far back some of the movers and shakers here at Paizo go and how experienced they are. I'm reading a chapter on Wizards of the Coast and their acquisition of TSR in 1997 and seeing familiar names like Lisa Stevens and Erik Mona. I know the 90s isn't that far back but in RPG terms its forever, like three D&Ds ago forever. (I'm coining the use of D&D editions as a measurement of RPG time if that hasn't happened already.) I have to say, these guys have a LOT of experience under their belts.

Paizo has an anniversary party for the employees and their families each summer, and for the last few years, we've been recognizing employees who have reached their 10-year anniversary with us. So far, that's Lisa Stevens, Vic Wertz, Erik Mona, James Jacobs, Jeff Alvarez, Wes Schneider, Gary Teter, Sarah Robinson, Jason Bulmahn, and James Sutter.

Pierce Watters was also with us at the very beginning, though he left and came back, and hasn't quite hit 10 years at Paizo yet... but he was Editor-in-Chief of Dragon and Dungeon before Wizards purchased TSR. Of Paizo employees, he's been in the gaming industry longer than anyone but Lisa and myself, and he's been in the publishing industry longer than Lisa.

Just that group right there is collectively approaching 150 years in the gaming industry.
