Technically a CR 10 encounter but it's impossible to build 'save or suck' effects into CR. In your example, the battle quickly became a CR 13 (with two level 9 characters joining the enemy). So that's close to an epic level encounter of TPK proportions.

I think the lesson here is to have only one creature dishing out save or sucks against the party. Aboleths can cast dominate monster 3/day so with 4 of them the entire party was likely to just be taken over.

At least you gave them a chance to see the spells being cast.

Hehehe I have a good one!

Level 2 party, we have a bit more equipment than we should have but nothing game breaking the local church gives us some potions sending us on a mission to investigate the vanishing of caravans in a town north from where we are.

So we clear the whole evil town temple of evil cultists. Find the what is left of the caravans and their people.
We slay everyone inside and then we reach the lowest floor of the temple and come across this immense brass door. I was playing a fighter with a penchant for opening fight with a javelin then drawing my great-sword. We are not stupid we know the head of the evil temple is behind this door so we formulate a plan, we sneak away from the door, fully heal with what channel energy our cleric has left, buff up and ready action for when out party rogue will open the door.

Rogue open the door I win initiative and throw a natural 20 javelin right at the villainous figure sitting on his throne. The GM look at me: "You should not have been able to hit this guy I am sorry for what has to come." Dragon cult sorcerer level 6 fully geared dude breath a cone of fire on all of us 6d6 damage no one but the cleric get her reflex save, the party sorcerer and druid die instantly as the DM rolls 6,6,6,6,5,5. I survive and stabilize at -13 HP (I had 14 con) the cleric survive at -10 HP too. We get captured and never managed to escape.

Needless to say after that we had a rule between GM and players that if anyone introduce something we are not supposed to fight at all we are warned. I almost flipped the table.
