Does this provoke an AoO?

Rules Questions

There is an imp sitting on the rails of a balcony that overlooks the area below. He is on the corner where the rails begin to go down the stairs.

XXXDTT

X= floor bellow
S = stairs
T = floor above
D = the imp sitting on the rails

Each letter reresents a 5ft square. Does moving through the bottom left S provoke?

Forum posts with partial subjects provoke an AoO from ME! And since I'm a tarrasque, it's quite a powerful AoO...

Yes, you threaten squares in all three dimensions. That includes diagonally down as long as the corner of your 5' cube (three dimensional 5' square) touches the corner of the 5'cube where the provoking action takes place.

No, the imp does not threaten that square because it's size is Tiny and it cannot reach any square but it's own.

An imp, in particular, is a Tiny creature, which has 0 ft reach; it can only attack creatures in its own square but not adjacent squares. Since none of the stairs are in the imp's square, none of them are threatened, and hence no AoO.

That's not the answer you wanted, unless you like technicalities, so let's assume that it's a gnome (Small size) instead.

A gnome has 5' reach and can attack adjacent squares, so it threatens both of the lower S squares. if the rails do not provide cover, then the gnome can attack normally.

However, "you can't execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with cover relative to you." If, in the GM's view, the rails provide cover, then the cover prevents AoO.

Thanks for the quick response.
