Is it weird that the treasure system intimidates me?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

As I'm sure it's obvious since I'm on this site, I love Pathfinder. It has awesome game mechanics, the world Paizo has built is fantastic, and it introduced me to tabletop roleplaying.

However, one thing about it intimidates me. As an aspiring writer, I love the idea of doing homebrew campaigns and settings. However, I'm afraid to do them because of treasure.

There's so much treasure in the game that I could give to players, but I have no idea what to put as treasure within rooms and for some reason, that makes me wanna stick to modules, even though I really wanna do homebrew stuff.

I have posted about this before, but I just thought I'd post again since I've been thinking about doing homebrew campaigns: Is it weird to feel intimidated by this part of the game and what would be a good solution?

I'm not sure if it's "weird," but it's not common. On the other hand, Pathfinder is a very complex system and any complex system is often intimidating.

There are some guidelines available for treasure. You can see them online at various places. In particular, there's a "treasure value per encounter" that lists how much money you should give people for an average-difficulty encounter, so "about" 260 gp would be appropriate money for a first-level party.

How you give it doesn't really matter since it will probably all be crushed into gold and/or magic items anyway. So you can let your imagination run wild with "A jewel-encrusted codpiece in the shape of a wolf's head that was owned by the great fighter Rigbar the Magnificent" or you can go more simply with a case of silver flatware, or even more simply with a bag of gold.

For magic items, try to make sure that everyone in the party has an opportunity to get items they need/want and make sure that they're fairly low value. One guideline is that "PCs [...] should spend no more than 25% of their wealth on weapons, 25% on armor and protective devices, 25% on other magic items, 15% on disposable items like potions, scrolls, and wands, and 10% on ordinary gear and coins", so giving a second-level PC a 900 gp hand of the mage might be unbalancing. But a couple of 50gp potions and a masterwork sword would be fine.

Use the system in Ultimate Equipment.

The core system is crufty, incomplete, unusable, etc. I could go on. And I did. And then they fixed it.

Ultimate Equipment Appendix 1 has a much better system. And I'd be shocked if someone hasn't completely automated it yet.

Archives of Nethys did and I make frequent use of it.

Tested that, seems like a good alleviation to my problem.

There you have it then.

That should be in the PRD.
