Yeah, if they don't heed your advice, the answer is not to resort to consistent verbal abuse. That's like advising someone to lose weight, and then when they don't calling them fat during the sessions. This is not how adults [are supposed to] handle problems.

I think it's the other way around. No one likes gaming with players with a player with poor hygiene. I get sometimes that coming from work it's unavoidable. After a point I'm willing to tell both a player and/or DM to wash up before coming to a session. Even if it means being late.
Sure. but a DM that is that rude is not someone I wanna game with. If someone is stinky, you take them aside and tell them privately.

If you smell like rotting death from 10' away, the DM saying it outloud didn't embarrass you; you embarrassed you. I assure you that telling you privately wouldn't alleviate that. Everyone already knew you stank.

Silver Crusade

You know, I had a long rambling ranting thing I was going to post about a player who was discontent with his Skald and the game in general, but refused to leave or change, but I decided that wasn't a good 101. I'm sure someone else can come up with something more humorous or potent :-)

stuff like this makes me glad I have almost no sense of smell, unless you come directly from shoveling s!&! I won't notice :-)

Why are people assuming the GM is always right...maybe the GM was just being a jerk by pointing at the player and saying that is how a rotting Zombie smells like.

Also, "embarrassment" is an emotion driven by our perceptions of how others see us, not how others see us.

In that case you ask them to leave- politely. Being rude is never the right option.

Pragmatically speaking; that is a complete falsehood.

That's not a reason to be booted from a table.

That's a reason to bring Elderberry wine to the table when it's ready.

Again I never said consistent verbal abuse. A occasional verbal reminder then eventually blunt. To be honest and blunt no one wants to play with a person who has poor hygiene. It can be done just not by myself or my gaming group. I won't remind anyone of being overweight as long as they don't complain about feeling unwell because of being overweight constantly.

Entirely possible then the DM is being a jerk. Though I'm assuming that the DM is pointing to a player with poor hygiene.

Telling a person to leave no matter how polite because of poor hygiene still is rude in a certain sense.

Scarab Sages

It depends how one defines the word "rude" - being gratuitously mean, or being honest without regard for social norms? I'd really like to see a great deal less of the former and a great deal more of the latter, in all arenas of life.

What's with this "drinking X's milk" meme?

Read (again), and be enlightened.

Scarab Sages

That's really where that thing began? That's kinda cool - still, it seems to have inflated in significance since that first post, so just what did I miss?

People bickered a lot about etiquette. A lot of people thought the whole argument was crazy silly. I'm sure the "spilled milk" joke helped it gain prominence, of course.

Scarab Sages

What "spilled milk" joke? "There's no use crying over [ibid]?" That's not a joke, that's just a proverb - and it doesn't help explain anything, so maybe you were referring to something different.

I'm confused. I was saying that the comparison between "Don't cry over spilled milk" and "Don't cry over drunk milk" might have made the "foul milkdrinker" stick in people's heads.

Mostly, though, the thread is referenced often because it's a great example of IRL melodrama becoming a Huge Deal on the Advice forums.

Exactly 200? Never 199 or 201? Sounds like a factiod, not a fact.

I wouldn't exactly call it coherent.

I see it as something akin to Bartertown.

The number is kept carefully steady by order of the Illuminati. One year it was 198. Ten people were killed in retaliation.

105. Taking another player's keys while they are in the bathroom, feigning going out to your car so that you can get your "forgotten" cell phone, whilst actually moving the other player's car around the corner and coming back before the other player returns from said bathroom so that when they leave, they think that someone stole their car.

Yes, this did actually happen.

Sounds like something I'd do to someone in my group ... although I guess it really depends how close and how long you've known the person (this person I've known almost 20 years).

In high school (30+ years ago) this one guy had a tiny, tiny car that a bunch of us picked up, loaded into the back of a pickup truck, and drove across town and unloaded it at his house. He never knew who did it or how his car got home w/out him.

The two players in question have known each other that long.

Then unless they hate each other that's not a reason to kick someone out of a group :-P

Wow I'm glad that never happened with our group. Chances are whomever moved the car would get punched in the face. Deservedly so imo. Were pretty easy going yet this kind of BS behavior disguised as a "joke" we are not impressed. It might be funny for the person who played the prank. Not so funny for the guy who has to call the police.

I never got the whole "this is my milk, food etc.. n one is allowed to use it". I get if it's a special kind of milk that a gamer is allowed to drink. As a group we share the food. Any gamer that does at my table better bring a cooler because he is not putting his milk in my fridge. He or she is also not allowed to take food that others brought. Fair is fair and it works both ways imo.

While moving someone's car is a pretty s~&$ty thing to do (my brother did this to me once) I hardly think it deserves a punch to the face:-) seems a bit of an over reaction doesn't it,

I never eat anyone else's food if I haven't brought any to share:-)

And I never go in someone else's fridge with out asking every time I do, its just good manners :-)

Liberty's Edge

It's easy to say that when no one moves your car. It's a huge hassle. Not to mention depending on the police officer mood he or she might even fine the person who taught it was a joke. Maybe not a punch in the face. Definitely not wanting to talk or even possibly no longer be friends. It's all fun and games up until the person can the police. Or had something of value stored in the car. Which depending on the neighbourhood it gets moved to maybe stolen.

Well if they take it so far that the police are involved then I can understand a little more, but in case you missed my post above I said it did happen to me, but my brother didn't take it that far! :-)

The police weren't called. It lasted just long enough to get a reaction from the guy who's car was moved.

Liberty's Edge

If Someone took my car keys and moved my car without my permission just to get a reaction out of me, I will make sure to see the reaction they have when I call the police, have them arrested and brought up on charges for theft. I don't care who it is, my best friend, my girlfriend, my mother, the pope. They crossed the line and it would be over between us.

If your police are anything like the ones I know, they'd laugh it off.

You'd be asking to bring up serious criminal charges on someone for a prank. Hell, you could even be arrested for 911 Abuse if you piss the officers off for wasting their time.

Really though, trying to have someone arrested for theft, because they moved your car is a serious dick move. You could potentially ruin someone's life with criminal charges, just because they made you upset for a bit.

Forget 101 reasons to be booted from a table, that'd be #1 on the list of "101 reasons for your friends to immediately remove you from all of their lives."

I wouldn't call 911. I would just call the main number. Then I can't get brought up on charges for 911 abuse. If they laugh it off, fine. It would still be over between me and whoever did that to me and thought it would be funny. Certain things you don't do that crosses a line for me. What if after car was moved I get a call that my girlfriend was in a bad accident and I spend time looking for the car. While I am looking for my car to go be with her, she dies. It's still funny right?

What if you forgot to charge your phone? What if you had it on silent? What if you didn't construct contorted scenarios to justify your visceral reactions?

Ooh, or what if a meteor crashes onto the Earth, and the Nanomachines inside take over the world, while the only thing that can stop them is locked in your car?

Liberty's Edge

Taking possession of another's car without permission isn't a dick move? I wouldn't want a so called friend like that anyway.

Hmmm. Involving the civil authorities might indeed ruin someone's life with criminal (indeed, felony) charges, because the charges would stick. Not because they made you upset for a bit. Because. They stole. Your car.

Nobody said it was a nice thing to do, that's sort of what pranks are...

I just try to play with grown ups and that removes a lot of these problems. While some people find the moving the car thing amusing, I know I don't. I'd likely find another group.
