Looking for a way to provide a small measure of emergency versatility for prepared spellcasters, both in and out of combat. A problem I'm having playing a druid is that infrequently, extremely specific circumstances arise in which a particular spell might either come in handy or lend itself to a creative way of solving an immediate problem. The spell in question is almost always one that I haven't prepared, and I can't afford to make scrolls for every single spell that I have access to.
Here's what I'm thinking:
...
Open Spell Slot
Once per day, you can spontaneously cast a single spell.
Prerequisites: ?
Benefit: When preparing spells, leave one spell slot open at your highest level. As a full-round action, that slot can be filled with any spell you have access to of the same level or lower.

Prepared casters can already leave spell slots open, but to fill those later takes at least 15 minutes per 1/4 of your spells to prepare.
If you have 20 spell slots available to you at the start of the day and decide to only fill 5 of them, you can spend 15 minutes doing so. However, if you wish to prepare only 6,you must spend at least a half hour preparing your spells. This works the same for divine and arcane spell casters.
And as pointed out upthread, there are feats for this.
