Sanctuary Question

Does sanctuary work against mindless creatures?

Sczarni

Sanctuary is Abjuration, and not Mind-Affecting, so it works fine against Constructs, Vermin, and the like.

Thank you, what about against a swarm? (Secondary piece)

Sczarni

It doesn't target a set number of creatures. You should be fine.

Swarms do not make attacks, so, Sanctuary cannot stop them. They just move over your space and you automatically take damage.

Sczarni

Well, that's not entirely true. They don't require an attack roll, but even the Swarm subtype states that Swarms still "attack".

Swarm Attack wrote:
Creatures with the swarm subtype don't make standard melee attacks. Instead, they deal automatic damage to any creature whose space they occupy at the end of their move, with no attack roll needed. Swarm attacks are not subject to a miss chance for concealment or cover. A swarm's statistics block has “swarm” in the Melee entry, with no attack bonus given. The amount of damage a swarm deals is based on its Hit Dice

Ok, so, are you suggesting that the Swarm would be unable to move into your space? Or that they would be unable to deal automatic damage to you?

Yeah, I think even though swarms cause automatic damage the text of swarm attack makes clear that is an attack; in fact it's a melee attack since the rule specifically went out of the way to specify that it's not a "standard melee attack". In any event RAI and RAW strongly suggest that sanctuary works on swarms.

Seems like it would move into your space, but upon a failed will save be unable to damage you.

Just like any other tiny-sized or smaller creature attempting to attack you.
