Familiar

I want to know if I get the magus arcana familiar do I have to take the familiar right away or can I wait a few levels. I ask because I want to get a sprite as a familiar but I can't get it till 5th. The reasons for doing this rather than waiting till 6th magus and getting it then are kinda complicated so I'll say that I would rather get it at 5th rather than 6th

Edit:this is for pfs

The familiar class feature does not compel you to have a familiar. You'll be fine. ^_^

No problem! ^_^

You may be selling yourself a little short, though.

As you likely know, a Sprite is an 'Improved Familiar' that you can take through the feat (I presume you'll take the feat at level 5).

Until then, you can just have a normal old familiar. My understanding is you swap 'em for free when you take Improved Familiar.

So - just take a turtle. It'll give you a +1 natural armor bonus (never a thing to sneeze at), and you will also gain the benefits of the 'Alertness' feat (helps perception and I think something else) while it is with you. You can just hide it in your robe and pretty much forget it is even there.

Unfortunately the improved familiar feat expands the list you can choose from it doesn't let you change if you've already made your choice

Incorrect.

I was unaware of this the wording of the feat makes it sound like you have to be at the point you could take a new familiar. Thank you

Dark Archive

Familiar Arcana at 3rd, Improved Familiar at 5th, and you're good to go.

Alternatively, you could enjoy two levels of a different Arcana, and just retrain it when you reach 5th.

EDIT: Alternatively alternatively, just grab both the Arcana and the feat at 3rd level (that's the minimum), and wait until 5th to activate them.

The Exchange

Heavy feat tax, though, for a wizard whose archetype gives up Arcane Bond (unless someone knows a workaround, that is)

Dark Archive

It's for a Magus.
