I choose race and class based on the concept I'm working on. I don't really care if the race doesn't have the "perfect" stat bonuses for the class...I'm not min maxing...I'm enjoying a roleplaying game ;)

My concern is rarely with optimization - I play some of the most questionable concepts around if the story appeals.

It's more about consistency of mechanics. The changeling isn't any better at witchcraft than anyone else. In fact, numerous races are better at it - humans, half-elves, elves, tieflings (the latter of which is actually pretty flavorful).

It's not just the lack of an Int bonus, either. Even tieflings, with their -2 to Charisma, get Fiendish Sorcery... an ability that says "Yes, we know about the Charisma, but tieflings have Hell or the Abyss in their blood."

Changelings have nothing of the sort. Even some minor bonus would cement the flavor. That's where my concern lies.

Hope I don't sound too defensive here. And, no offense taken nor meant. ^_^

^For that matter, Halflings are also better than Changelings for making debuffing Witches. What's the deal with no Changeling Jinx alternate Racial Trait?

With a good backstory I will let non-standard 'half' races like aasimar, tiefling, dhampire, changeling, etc trade something for a racial trait of the non-human standard race. Like for example, I'd let the changeling who was born of a halfling father trade her hag trait for any halfling trait, so yeah Halfling Jinx would be great. Or, another race example (this very character in fact was inspiration for that idea, until I decided to just give her Racial Heritage since she was mythic but I still retain the idea if a player wants to do something similar)... I'd let an Aasimar trade their spell-like ability for a halfling jinx trait. But again, I want a good backstory, not just "I want halfling jinx so i am saying my mom was a halfling"

This is cool, but still, it would be good if the official system had more support for this kind of thing -- if it did, it would get wider use.
