Pummeling Style vs Elusive Target

Rules Questions

3 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

Pummeling style has us roll all attacks we can possibly make in a full-attack action, but is described as a single, yet devastating punch.

Elusive Target has us roll our reflex against an attack roll for half or no damage.

Which attack roll does the reflex save go against? Does it evade that one attack roll?
Does it require multiple saves, or do we count the first or highest attack roll?
Does it just not work at all? Is this one punch so devastating it simply can not be dodged?

Should I just consult my DM?

Thanks in advance!

I would say let them roll against the highest attack roll, personally.

It's unclear now.

There are essentially two schools of thought These can be summarised as:
1) focus on the "one mighty strike" - in which case you get one reflex save against all of the damage.
2) focus on the "attack as normal" - in which case you can elude only one attack roll.

Both are valid under the current RAW. I prefer the second option as it is smoother and simpler (IMO of course). It doesn't weaken things like sneak attack or make miss chances more swingy or raise questions like "which attack roll do I make my reflex save to avoid all of the damage?".

But yeah, consult your GM. Maybe let him look at the above thread at the main arguments so he can see some of the issues that arise.

Pummeling Style should be ruled as a single attack, imho, but even if you do consider it to be a collection of multiple attacks, this is still a very good question. There are plenty of other abilities which allow multiple attack rolls for a single attack, and it's unclear how to apply Elusive Target in these situations.

FAQed for you.

I think errata is incoming for pummeling style already, so FAQing won't be much use.

Thanks again for your inputs, everyone!
