Buying equipment between games / selling equipment

Pathfinder Society

Hi there, I'm about to play my second ever session of PFS tomorrow, and wanted to clarify if I can buy normal equipment to stock up for it with the gold I earned in my first session?

EG; Acid flasks to use as a power component for my acid splash, a crossbow for when I've used all my spells, ammo etc...

Also I'd bought a saddle for my giant weasel but wont be able to ride it till It's lvl 4 ad medium so can I sell the saddle to lose the encumbrance? If so, do I sell it for half the price I paid? and do I need to enter this on a tracking sheet or anything?

Just want to be sure I'm doing the right thing ^^

Also am I allowed to exchange my GP for PP at 10 to 1 to reduce my personal encumbrance?

I use Hero Lab so I can just enter it on my journal as Exchanged GP for PP?

Welcome to PFS. A lot of questions here.

1. You can buy gear between sessions. Record the gear on your ITS, and have the GM at your next session sign off on the purchases.

2. Yes, that includes acid flasks and crossbows.

3. You can sell the saddle. If your character is 1st level, you can sell it back at full price (along with any other gear you want to get rid of). If you are higher than 1st level, you sell it back at half price. In either case, you should enter that on your ITS.

Note: You can also just store the saddle for now. You don't need to carry it with you everywhere you go. All Pathfinders are assumed to have a residence somewhere. You can leave any items you want at home.

4. You can carry your wealth in the form of gold, platinum, gems, jewelry, or letters of credit. All of this is hand-waived for simplicity in PFS. Moreover, even though you are correct to diligently track encumbrance, the weight of your coins is ignored in that calculation (again, for simplicity). Also, as mentioned above, you need not carry all of your wealth with you wherever you go. You can leave stuff at home while you are adventuring (though it is generally a good idea to carry some "walking around money").

5. I don't use HeroLab, so I'm not entirely sure about this, but I believe there is a check box to turn off the tracking of the weight of your coinage.

Also, even though you did not ask this, you should be aware that HeroLab is not considered a legal rules source for any classes, feats, spells, items, or abilities that are found anywhere outside of the Core Rulebook.

Lastly, be sure to download and read the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play.

yes, you can buy normal equipment. You should read the Guide to Organized Play to see what is always available and what isn't.

As to coin weight most people ignore it completely. It's not an official PFS rule but play would be pretty much impossible if players actually tracked coin weight part of encumbrance. You can configure HL to do so as well.

Great stuff, thanks for the speedy replies :)

You should download the Guide to PFS Organised Play from this site as a reference for many of these procedural questions. You can buy equipment for your character with gold that the character earned. In theory this is supposed to happen in the presence of a GM (while completing chronicles for the session or before the next one) but many groups will be practical about this.

Almost all non-magical equipment is Always Available for purchase, which means you can buy it without qualifying through adventures. The Guide has more details.

You must record purchases over 25 gp (and in some ways it works just as well to record all your equipment) on an Inventory Tracking Sheet, as included in the back of the Guide.

Generally you sell gear for half the price you paid for it, thus you only get gold for items that you purchased with gold.

Since you haven't yet played your character at 2nd level or higher, you can rebuild it between sessions, including changing its gear apart from anything you've expended or damaged. Thus currently you can get back the full price of the saddle. You'd record this change on the Inventory Tracking Sheet.

So...I thought that this was an official rule, which is why I wrote what I did in the post above yours. But I think you are right. I have double-checked both the Guide and the FAQ, and I have come up short. Oh well.

To stop Hero Lab from including coin weight, head to:

Character->Configure Hero

There is a 'checkbox' style menu there - it is long. Eventually there is a section called "Optional Rules" and in that section there is a checkbox called "No Coin Weight". This checkbox is perhaps 4/5 of the way down to the bottom (as best my eye can measure). Check that box and you're good to go!

Not really, but given that you're assumed to have a place to store things you don't want to bring on missions, I doubt that most characters are walking around with all their money on hand.

When I started playing PFS I read the Guide and the FAQ looking for such a rule and could not find it. It is obviously assumed by campaign management and by every player but it isn't written down anywhere.

Unless I am mistaken, with the advent of the ITS GMs no longer really need to sign off on purchases. You just need to make sure to include the value of the stuff you've purchased on your ITS on the "gold spent" box of the accounting on the right side of the chronicle sheet.

Now, yes, nominally, the GM is supposed to not sign the chronicle sheet until you've filled out all of those accounting boxes, so that would be a sort of GM signing off on it next time (as the GM would have the sign the sheet with the accounted box in it). However, since I last did it myself over a year ago, I have never seen a PFS GM actually require all the gold accounting to be signed off before the GM signed the chronicle sheet. And, since I seemed to be the only one doing it the way the PFS Guide tells you to, I stopped doing it myself as well. (And I am glad. It has saved me some paperwork, and also the hassle of telling players they have to know what they want to purchase at the end of the session right there....)

As an alternative for coin weight, you can put it in the 'dropped to ground' container in the equipment list for hero labs.

When my characters get handy haversacks, bags of holding and pathfinder pouches, I try to fit their coinage in the containers if they actually carry any. It makes more sense to have thousands of coins in letters of credit or draw if you actually have to have it with you in a scenario. Most purchasing is done at the end, once you have gotten back home.

You can convert coins to jewelry and back again freely. Shouldn't be an issue unless you're in a small town and you need to buy something cheap and the innkeeper doesn't have change for a 700gp emerald.

Gems and Jewelry

Gems and jewelry can be bought or sold at their total value, and are sometimes used as currency. For simplicity's sake, assume that 50 gems weigh 1 pound.

Since you're level 1 you can "retrain" the saddle out for free at full price. Or just put it in the shop till the weasel grows up.

I also inform all my players that anything purchased/sold after you leave the table of the last session will go on the next chronicle. (so if the last chronicle was number 2, the in between sessions purchases would go on chronicle 3, the one you will get at the next session)

There is indeed a checkmark to remove gold encumbrance, it is after all the licenses lists and near the end of the huge list when you first make the character. (This is the same check list you use to indicate that it is a PFS character) You can go back into the "Configure character" and access to that list under the tab "Character."

There is a rule that says something like "In most cases, Pathfinders are assumed to have enough bags and ability to carry away any loot they find." that applies to not having to track encumberance for most loot you find in the adventure. (There are specific cases called out where part of the challenge of the adventure is to carry very heavy plunder back to town or lose it.)

I don't remember seeing anything about coin weight encumberance, but I have yet to see anyone track or enforce it.

This might be an issue if the PC just played his third game, and wants to sell back something... On the next CR it sells for half price....

I wouldn't think so, if it is done at the beginning of play, when he is "not yet played at second level" as long as that is annotated on the ITS.

On coin weight: I believe Mike concurred on not counting it a while back in one of his posts, but it has been a while, and it might even have been one of the earlier folk in that job, like Hyrum or even Josh...

The ITS will list it as being on CR4 correct?

The PC is level 2 at that point.
So....
This will be a problem with many Judges.

When i asked this question to my local 5-star GM I was told that Patherfinders have a bank that can drawn from to make purchases.

Just don't try that in Bloodcove!

Apsis Agent: "So, how will you be paying your bribe today?"

Warwick: "Here's a check from my account at the First Bank of the Pathfinder Society."

Awkward pause.

Warwick: "What?"

I would not include "rebuild" selling on the ITS as it becomes a non-entity and the character never had it in the first place. If it is included, he can simply put it on the chronicle he has (Number 3 in this example) and inform the next GM that he used the First Level rebuild to change out equipment.

The reason I tell player to put the purchases/selling on the next chronicle is to comply with the new rulings in 5th season that began the ITS. It is explained that purchases should be complete for the new chronicle earned before the player leaves the table. In my own experience, it is just easier to put the subsequint purchases done in between sessions on the next (upcoming) chronicle to keep it in order.

5/5 5/55/55/5

I would just not bother with an ITS , at all, until level 2 except for wands and consumables.

Liberty's Edge 5/5 5/5 *** Venture-Lieutenant, Indiana—Martinsville

I think I would use it at the point when the character is finalized and ready to earn his 4th chronicle, going to 2nd level at that point, if that were the case. My own preference is to use the ITS from the start, but I usually don't rebuild 1st level characters either.

Just be sure you also own the source that those options come from (sounds like Alchemy Manual and Bestiary 4, I believe?)

You have the option to either bring the book itself, a watermarked PDF, or select pages from that PDF.

Too many ppl fall into the trap of believing that owning just HeroLab fulfills that requirement.
