Taurus (Cow Centaurs)

Homebrew and House Rules

Taurus are cows with a humans body where the head should be.

Taurus

+2 Intelligence, -2 Wisdom, +2 Constitution (For Males), +2 Charisma (For Females).

Taurus are treated as both a animal and a humanoid with the human subtype.

Taurus are Large Creatures, but they buy weapons and armor as if they were medium size.

Taurus have a base speed of 40 feet.

Cow Bell: Every Taurus wears a cow bell around its neck. We don't know why, but every single one does. It makes a sound whenever the Taurus moves, and they have a -2 penalty to Stealth checks. However the bell looks extremely awesome, and they gets +2 Charisma.

Bulls Horns (Male): Male Taurus have a primary gore attack dealing 1d6 damage.

Milk (Female): Once per day, Female Taurus can gain fast healing 1 for 1/2 minute per class level (min 1).

Obsessive (Calf): Taurus Calfs receive a +2 racial bonus on a Knowledge skill of their choice.

Darkvision: Taurus have darkvision out to 60 feet.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Can't say I am a fan of sexual dimorphism in character stats.

The stats seem off. Wisdom seems much more appropriate than Intelligence.

Why would that be trates as Humanoids and also Animals, instead of just Monstrous Humanoids (like Centaurs)?

The bell......what?

Why would they have Darkvision rather than Lowlight Vision, like animals and Centaurs?

Are you asking for feedback or just sharing?

Feedback would be nice. :D

Get rid of the gender differences.

In PF, creatures don't have two types.

They buy armor and weapons as if medium, but what about using items of certain sizes?

No one knows why they wear a cow bell, they just do? Come on. It grants a +2 to Charisma, and you've already given out a +2 Charisma bonus. Scrap this ability.

First you have defferences based on gender, and now if the taurus is a calf. Where did this suddenly come from? Why does a young taurus have greater knowledge than an older one?

I need to know what role the taurus are gonna play in your game. And why they are so weak. Str 10 is no good on large creatures. IMOP. The Bell is silly. Also the stats are Strange to me bonus to int and knowledge?
More background and place in the World then we Can look at numbers.

Okay yea it was kinda bad... but i wanted to make a cow centaur race to I'll make a better one.

Verdant Wheel

First, call it Cowtaur!
Next, if you must keep the dimorphism, females are generally way tougher (+CON) than males. I would switch the two.
Third, toss Cow Bells. It's not a racial ability. Instead make it an item that Cowtaurs use that gives them a bonus on Diplomacy or Perform.
Fourth, toss the fast healing. Maybe allow choice between Horns or Tail attack?
Last, Cowtaur should be slow not fast. Because cows are slow. So, 20 feet. To compensate, maybe because they have 5 stomachs you can give them a (+4) bonus against sickened/nauseated?

This. Is. Awesome.

Actually, there is precedence for sexual dimorphism, in People of the Stars there is a race of aliens whose males and females have different ability score bonuses

The precedence in RPGs goes back further in time than that. There are just a lot of us who think it's bad design. Other people like it - maybe for story purposes. Maybe in a certain race's culture, the males make better wizards and the females make better clerics. For some people, that's an interesting facet of their culture. For others like myself, it means literally every PC cleric of that race will be female, and every wizard a male.

I don't have an issue with gender dimorphism in an RP or descriptive sense. If you want the females of the species to be larger than the males (like Gnolls), that's cool.

If you want the females of the species to gravitate toward one role, and males another (like the Jadwiga human ethnicity in Golarion), that's cool too.

But I don't think gender difference needs to be expressed mechanically for 99% of races. Both male and female Gnolls are Medium. Male and female humans have the same stat's. The difference remains cultural or purely descriptive.

For your Taurus, I would suggest something like....

Large sized Monstrous Humanoid
Abilities: +2 Str, +2 Wis, -2 Int
Speed 30
Gore 1d6
Stubborn: +2 vs Charm and Compulsion, second save 1 round later
Of the Herd: Gains a bonus Teamwork feat at 1st level
Darkvision 60'
Undersized Weapons: Despite being Large, Taurus have 5' reach and use Medium sized weapons

Comes in at about 14 RP, with an ad hoc -2 for Undersized Weapons, and Of the Herd costing 3 RP (between Flexible and Static bonus feat costs). And I was wrong about Centaurs, as Monstrous Humanoids they do have Darkvision.

By all means, you could have an alternate race trait that replaces the Gore, and just assume that almost all the female Taurus take the alternate trait in your setting.

No problem with sexual dimorphism, but it must be must be kept to a minimum.

Liberty's Edge

The only really compelling case of statistical dimporphism I've seen is with that cockroach-like race from the China Mieville book. Only one sex is actually sapient, tool-using, and capable of speech. The other is a mindless bug. (Actually I think in the Dragon article they didn't stat out the bug sex, but it's probably just got stats of something like a fire beetle.)

Call them Torotaurs.
