”So it’s just mold, right? It won’t move? And we could go around it?“ Filk relaxes a bit, presuming to be safe from the mold for now. Going around it would mean climbing the harder route, and the stairs are much more lucrative choice.

”Do you any magic against it, Valerka? If fire and heat makes it grow, maybe cold would shrink it.“

The party can barely see a goblin reaching over the side of the wall, and dropping an alchemists fire on the brown mold, causing it to grow... and then Atrix's oil also catches on fire, and it doubles in size!

Choices now are to climb the wall or rush through the moldy area. Or find a good AE cold spell.

Filk has -1 on climb, so it isn't very attractive option. Could he use basic telekinesis to place a grappling hook somewhere above?

I don't think 2nd level characters have much option for AoE cold spells, so getting rid of the mold doesn't work. And rushing through is quite risky, if it deals 3d6 damage - and apparently there will be goblins on the other side. Climb up, or turn back?

"Yeah, let's head back a bit. Can you walk, Atrix? You look like a frostbite with two legs."

Yes, we'll withdraw. At least outside the range of goblin weapons. Do we want to stay close to the platform, and keep eyes on the goblins. Or just take a hike into the woods (~1h walk)? Are we in need of rest for resetting spells/abilities? Or is it enough to get that NL damage off Atrix?

And what's our plan for getting up there once we're back in action. Knotted rope and climb? Somehow try to prevent the goblins from attacking the climbers?

If that's the case then I'd like to directly counter your contention that I didn't destroy the mold with ray of frost. This is an absolutely ludicrous challenge at level 2 if that's the case. The description of Brown Mold doesn't state you destroy "that square" it states you destroy the mold with cold.

Seriously. At this point we might as well walk away, because it's now an uncontrollable mold pile that we have no capacity to deal with.

The team finds themselves a camping place about 1/2 hour from the goblin controlled fort. Atrix thinks that they've found something safe, and the cave has one entrance, so the can keep a watch for intruders.

The team spends a half day marching back to the goblin fort. When they get there, they notice that the mold is still on the stairs, but that it hasn't grown since they saw it last. If anything, it might be more contained. They are not harassed by goblins in the way in.

"So, Valerka.. Do you think your spells can make the mold go away?" Filk asks, eyeing the moldy stairs with suspicion.

There are no goblins to be seen, but that doesn't of course mean there aren't any hiding somewhere. Filk grabs a few pebbles from the ground in case the pesky creatures pop up somewhere.
