Invisibility Post-Glitterdust

Rules Questions

Dark Archive

Sorry if this has been asked before, searching the Messageboards did not yield the specific answer I'm looking for.

Glitterdust negates all invisibility within the area of effect when casted, and the dust remains for the duration of the spell.

Does the dust remain on the creature or stay within the area of effect? If a creature leaves the area of effect after being cast, does it "carry" the dust with it?

For example, party is attacked by an invisible stalker. Wizard successfully casts glitterdust to include the stalker in the area of effect. On the stalker's next turn, it leaves the area of effect. Does the stalker remain dusted/visible after leaving the glitterdust area of effect?

Thanks.

This is answered by the spell itself:

Quote:
All within the area are covered by the dust, which cannot be removed and continues to sparkle until it fades.

Quote:
A cloud of golden particles covers everyone and everything in the area, causing creatures to become blinded and visibly outlining invisible things for the duration of the spell. All within the area are covered by the dust, which cannot be removed and continues to sparkle until it fades. Each round at the end of their turn blinded creatures may attempt new saving throws to end the blindness effect.

Once you're covered you're covered until it fades, even if you move out of the original spread.

Sorry if the question was noob, but I understand there are other AoE spells the stop affecting a creature after it moves of out of where the spell was cast. I was thinking that maybe Glitterdust was the same, that the dust only covered creatures while in the area of effect, the same manner that entangle only entangles creatures while in its area of effect.

Note that the area line of the spell is "creatures and objects within a 10' area" and not "a 10' area".

Ah, I guess that makes the difference. Thank you! :)

another question. what if someone under glitterdust became invisible? does Glitterdust still works or not?

I mean: glitterdust creates golden glitter on the subject(s) so you can see them as part of the subject equipment (like a sword or an hat). So a new invisibility should make them invisible too...or not?

I think the answer is no. Invisibility spells can't make light sources invisible, so the sparkling of the particles remain visible.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I would say no because this is a specific magic effect that is designed to counter things like invisibility and says it "cannot be removed and continues to sparkle until it fades". And otherwise a creature that can cast Invisibility at will could just recast it the next round.
I disagree with you Matthew that this spell gives off light. While "sparkle" can mean that it gives of light like sparks. It can also mean somthing is highly reflective and "sparkles" like a diamond or glitter. The second seems the more likely based on the name of the spell and "A cloud of golden particles".
Also absent from the spell description are some of the things one would expect from a light producing spell, such as the [light] descriptor, info on how much light is given off or how the spell interacts with darkness. Compare to the description of Faerie Fire.
