I am one pip away from completion of the Avatar Project. Time to assault a base or two, then make some contacts so I can continue to hit them and hit them hard!
Resistance Radio should be researched ASAP. Sadly, that is step one. Step two is building a resistance radio in every area that you have made contact with. Worth it, but expensive.

That was fun. Can we do it again?
I just had my first "Base Raid". I suggest installing the defense matrix subsystem and upgrading it to quad cannons, if you can. I would also make sure that your initial squad has a squadsight sniper (or two) and a sneaky ranger to be the snipers spotter. You will know what I mean when it happens. Having said that, a heavy or two is always welcome. Their ability to shred armor is invaluable.

Well yesterday, my avatar box filled up. 24 hours til ?? Luckily I had just unlocked one of the regions with a facility to blow up. I spent two hours finishing a scan, then flew over to new mexico to blow up the compound. It took 3 dots of the full meter. THREE! *whew*
Now, I've got another facility exposed and accessible, and 1 two regions away. Also, two story missions which i'm sure will drop timer. So, went from the brink of doomsday to back in business!

The shadow chamber projects imply, at least to me, that they're trying to engineer the perfect human, likely to add to their invasion force. Commander's military genius, the genetic markers of thousands of 'volunteers', etc. Avatar is the genetic base for their cloned human death machines to conquer the rest of the galaxy. /theory

~starts to show you all the new tech and the new aliens and the other new toys~ You want to do it. You need to do it. You must do it. So you will be buying a new computer.
P.S. - This game is the reason why I did not get an XBOX one or a PS4. OTOH, I am now able to play a few other games that would not play on my old computer.

If it were just the cost, that would be one thing. But the pain of a PC goes well beyond the price tag for one as ignorant and backwards as yours truly. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a console version (yay) or iPad version (F+## yeah!) - every time I am exposed to the new version of Windows, I weep tears of blood and beg for the sweet release of death.

The exclusivity is down to mods. Apparently Firaxis talked to Microsoft and Sony and the deal is that the mods still have to be approved by Microsoft and Sony in a process taking weeks (which apprently pre-this generation they said wouldn't happen, then it did), so Firaxis said screw that and basically ignored them. Also, EU and EW sold fairly mediocrely on console anyway.
Another part of the problem is the "randomly" generated maps. Apparently there's an enormous amount of hardcoding in the generation algorithms which prevent the maps doing crazy things and looking natural and logical. Even on a hefty PC the load times are a lot longer than for EW and EU (which only had 80 map combos to cycle through). Apparently it would be flat out impossible for a tablet to do the same thing and it would make the load times on even the XB1 and PS4 be unacceptably long.
A port is still possible of course: ignore the modding side of it, add controller support (that's coming anyway in the first patch) and drop the randomly generated maps in favour of an EW/EU system of having pre-fabs which cycle around. But that's a fair amount of work that Firaxis aren't interested in putting in right now. Maybe further down the line.

Thanks - I very much appreciate the insight as to why this is a PC-only release. I've logged a lot of time on the Xbox 360 and iPad playing EW/EU (with almost zero instances of crashing), and I'll continue to pine for a release on those platforms. In any event, I hope it sells spectacularly, whether or not the game ever makes its way to a device I am willing to use.
Is there a demo available to see if I can even run it? One of my great frustrations with PC gaming is the uncertainty of whether or not I can even run a particular game. Now that I understand it's the terrain generation rather than intensive graphics that requires the heavy lifting, I may re-investigate installing it on a laptop (I kept getting flagged as unable to run the game due to the graphics card).

I don't rightly know - it's a fairly new hybrid laptop/tablet with some standard Intel graphics card. I don't have the computer on me, but I can check next time I am at home. It's definitely not the kind of graphics card you'd put into a computer built for gaming (the computer was for my daughter to do school work, but she and my wife became so frustrated with Windows that I inherited it).

Actually most of the games say they don't support integrated graphic cards. Which means that the designers did not nothing to make sure it will work on one... So its up to you if you want to take the risk or not. They often work, albeit at lower details, with overall loss of gameplay quality, and with increased RAM requirements above the listed by 1-2 GB because the integrated gfx card uses regular RAM. I played XCOM, Dragon Age 3, and Tomb Raider on my integrated gfx laptop with 8 GB of RAM. I managed to install Witcher 3 and play through tutorial but the quality was far below acceptable to continue beyond tutorial.
If my nefarious plan of getting XCOM 2 for birthday will work I may let you know about the results in about 2 weeks.
EDIT: However, my integrated gfx card is Radeon HD 8330 which is cut down version of dedicated Radeon which is almost certainly supported. No idea how will Intel one behave...

here's hoping they change their minds....

One thing i have started doing, for small personal enjoyment, is having the people i know (RL and from Chatroom atm) make a trooper i add into my soldier Codex. then i can recruit/use em in future games. (at the time of this message, you are still alive, Freehold!) Maybe some folks would be interested in posting some details (not real info) to have their own creations placed into other's games?

Col. Reuben "Stinger" Rose, a Native American warrior who for some reason has his awesome dothraki braid disappear when he dons his Jason Mask. He chops fools like the Boy from Crystal Lake when he's not critting with nearly every shot.
He looks like Casey Jones to my 3y/o daugther. So she calls him Casey.
