You're not in the wrong. I like players who point things like that out, and I often do that myself and have been yelled at quite a lot for it.

Often, I'm actually the player who forgets he had something, but I appreciate it when someone reminds me. I've had far too many times that I forget I was poisoned and so did the GM but I don't realize it until after the scenario is done and have gone home, and then I'm actually kind of mad about it. :p

The most diplomatic way to handle it, is to quietly remind the player first.

If the responce is, "shut up, maybe the GM will forget." Then that isn't OK.

I think the OP did fine and the screamer was in the wrong.
