Rod of Wonder and it's unpredictable use

Rules Questions

I did some searching on the forums for using this item in combat with allies nearby, and they all covered how a player can say "No, you can't do that" if you were to perform an action that could possibly harm them. However, with the Rod of Wonder, the caster does not know if the result of the use of the rod could be harmful until after it is used as a standard action and the percentile die are rolled.

So my question is would I need to get the permission of other people I am playing with to even use the rod? Because it would first cost a standard action to activate before the percentile die are rolled to learn if the action is harmful or not.

Or, after the rod is used, and the result is learned, could players then say no they don't accept whatever would have happened to them. And the standard action to active the rod would still be spent.

I'm just kind of foggy on how the Rod of Wonder could be used in combat when many of the affects are AoE, especially when you have fighters up close with the enemy.

Well, for one, if this isn't PFS, you don't need to ask for remission from anyone to use the rod.

If it is, then maybe it should be in a PFS forum?

I'm not sure you understand the use of the rod.
It's not meant to be an actual combat weapon, heck, one of the options makes leaves grow from the target.

It's meant for the fun value of the rod, and that's all.

That being said, there are a few abilities, I think, that let you roll twice for confusion-like effects, of which this is one.

That gives you two options to pick from, making it more "useful".

The one time I've seen a rod of wonder used in combat ended after three rounds with the wielder of the rod running through a pile of flowers after having been shrunk to the size of a fieldmouse. Although he did get to zap somebody with a lightning bolt. :)

In a non-PFS game, just use it and the other players can groan when it goes wrong.

I have been in a game where a rod of wonder was the main attack of one of the other players. I think she did more damage to the party than any adversary, but it was sort of fun for a while.
Though us other players eventually started making sure our characters were all well away from hers and did not come to her aid when needed - because a rebuilt character would not have had the rod any more.

If you are playing PFS, or with some no friendly-fire house rule, then the rod is probably not the best for you.

If it is a regular home game with just the book rules (so friendly fire is something that will occasionally happen) be certain you are actually friends enough with the other players that they won't hold it against you.

Wait, I could have a Rod of Wonde fin PFS?

There is a character in a campaign I'm playing that basically did this, except it's their Fairy Dragon families who is crazy (and, cooncidentally, the one with the rod).

The rod is fun, the ongoing joke is the dragon using it to try and open doors (all other characters have learned to keep their distance).

My Loremaster once used Disintegrate on NPC Fighter foe, he failed the save ... then our Rogue used a Rod of Wonder and rolled in the 16-20 category.

16-20 result:
Gust of Wind at windstorm force

We all about died laughing at the result.
