Why enchantment (charm) when there are only 8 spells in it?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I went through the Wizard spell list on the SRD, and went through all Enchantment spells there. 8 (eight) were (charm) spells, I've not counted all the others but it felt at least 10 times that.

Just feels weird to split the whole school into two sub schools and then basically give everything to one.

Am I missing something?

I'm pretty sure Pathfinder inherited the Charm/Compulsion tags from D&D 3.5, but I'm honestly not sure why the designers of 3rd edition made them separate subschools.

Did a quick search in the D20PFSRD database, apparently there are 15 spells in the Charm subschool and 148(!) spells in the Compulsion subschool.

There are 17 spells that I can find, but regardless, I imagine the distinction between compulsion and charm all comes down to flavor and the whim of the writer. It does look like they could all be rolled into compulsion but maybe there are some special abilities that are only supposed to work with that small subset?

Apparently you're missing 7 or 9 charm spells, but you're pretty close about ten times the others.

Are you having a problem with that? I fail to see your point or what you might expect us to answer with
