Does failing to move through an enemy's square provoke for the movement that didn't happen?

Rules Questions

Erm...yeah, I don't really know what to put in the post when the title asks the question.

I guess a generalisation of the question would be: does failing to do something that provokes still provoke?

In the case of the title, yes:

If you attempt to move through an enemy's space and fail the check, you lose the move action and provoke an attack of opportunity.

In general terms failing a check on something to avoid an attack of opportunity will let the opponent take that attack of opportunity.

Exception I think is defensive casting which wastes the spell if you fail but in general doesn't allow the enemy to whack you.

What I meant to ask was 'would it additionally provoke for moving out of a threatened square'?

I think I need more sleep. Or possibly more cups of tea.
